Russell Westbrook Says 'You Got To Start Protecting The Players' After Popcorn Incident With Fan

May 27, 2021 1:16 AM

A fan dumped popcorn as an injured Russell Westbrook walked towards the locker room, prompting criticism from Westbrook and his Washington Wizards teammates.

"To be completely honest, this s--- is getting out of hand, especially for me. The amount of disrespect, the amount of fans just doing whatever the f--- they want to do -- it's just out of pocket," said Westbrook, who injured his ankle. "There are certain things that cross the line. Any other setting ... a guy were to come up on the street and pour popcorn on my head, you know what happens.

"In these arenas, you got to start protecting the players. We'll see what the NBA does."

The fan was ejected after the incident, which occurred during the Wizards 120-95 loss to the Sixers in Game 2.

Scott Brooks hoped that the fan would be banned from attending NBA games.

"Very disrespectful. Philadelphia is better than that," added Brooks.

Westbrook's status for Game 3 is undetermined.

Joel Embiid On Tobias Harris Following Game 1 Win: 'He Showed Up The Whole Game'

May 23, 2021 7:51 PM

Tobias Harris scored a playoff career high 37 points as the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Washington Wizards 125-118 in Game 1.

"Yesterday I was watching NBA games, and I was kind of surprised. I said, 'Man, all these games are really close.' It wasn't like a real big spread in any of them," said Harris following the game. "And I think this whole playoffs, game in and game out, you're gonna see dogfights from all around the league."

Bradley Beal scored 33 points for the Wizards, who were up 62-61 at halftime.

Joel Embiid dismissed the idea that the Sixers layoff was the reason for the Sixers slow start.

"You know we've been there," said Embiid, who added 30 points. "And we also have a goal, and to get to that goal, we got to get through these guys. So you know, the mindset is just me, it doesn't matter if it's a week or two weeks off, it doesn't matter if we haven't played in a while. That should not be an excuse."

Doc Rivers added that the Sixers would have to improve their transition defense in Game 2.

"I mean, this team, over all the teams, they're going to force you to load to the ball and then get back out to your guy. I didn't think we did a very good job of it; second half I thought it was great.

"So we have a blueprint now to watch tomorrow and go over."

Russell Westbrook On Breaking All-Time Triple-Double Record: 'It's Just A Blessing'

May 11, 2021 1:19 AM

Russell Westbrook recorded his 182nd career triple-double during Monday night's 125-124 loss to the Atlanta Hawks, breaking Oscar Robertson's record for all-time triple-doubles.

Westbrook finished the game with 28 points, 21 assists, and 13 rebounds.

"It's just a blessing. You put so much into the game, so much time, you sacrifice so much, to be able to just be mentioned with guys like Oscar, Magic and Jason Kidd, those guys, is something I never dreamed about as a young kid growing up in LA. Truly grateful for moments like this," said Westbrook after the game.

Westbrook, who is averaging a triple-double on the season, has recorded 36 triple-doubles this year.

Westbrook added that he didn't know how far he could stretch his record.

"I guess we will see in another 50 years or so. I don't know. Through the good, the bad and the ugly, I always stay true to myself," Westbrook added about his mentality. "I will never change because I have been blessed to be able to play this game at a level that nobody else can play at. And I won't stop until I can't play no more."
