Fight With Raccoon Eventually Leads To Surgery For Summitt

Pat Summitt had problems with her right shoulder after dislocating it while chasing a raccoon poised to attack her Labrador back in March.

Summitt had arthroscopic surgery Thursday in Knoxville, Tenn., to repair recurring instability problems.

Syracuse's Devendorf Gets Extra Year Of Eligibility

Syracuse guard Eric Devendorf has been granted a hardship waiver by the Big East Conference which will give him an additional year of athletic eligibility, the Associated Press is reporting.

The school applied on Devendorf's behalf after he suffered a torn ACL in a game last December against East Tennessee State and missed the rest of the season. Devendorf started the first 10 games of 2007-08 and averaged 17 points a game.

Tubby Smith's Nephew Stabbed And Killed

Tubby Smith's newphew was stabbed to death during a fight at an off-campus apartment.

Police say 19-year-old William L. Smith, a Becker College student who lived in Scotland, Md., was killed early Sunday.

"We lost a special young man last night," Tubby Smith said in a statement released by the school. "The grieving process will take some time for my brother and his family, but I know that they appreciate and will need all the support."

Donovan Still Hasn't Signed New Deal With UF 15 Months Later

Fifteen months after he walked away from a deal with the Orlando Magic, Billy Donovan still hasn't signed his six-year, $21-million contract extension with the Florida Gators that was announced in June 2007.

Florida Athletic Director Jeremy Foley said Tuesday that the school is "very close" to an agreement with Donovan's camp.

Arizona Reports Possible NCAA Violation

The U. of Arizona has reported a possible NCAA recruiting violation by Coach Lute Olson, according to an Associated Press report.

AD Jim Livengood said Monday that Olson had sent a letter to boosters asking for a donation to Jim Storey?s Arizona Cactus Classic basketball tournament, held last May at Arizona?s McKale Center. NCAA rules prohibit institutional representatives or boosters from arranging financial assistance for potential recruits.

Seton Hall Recruit Files Suit Against Big East And NCAA

Michael Glover enrolled at Seton Hall in 2007, but was ruled ineligible that fall after the NCAA invalidated his entire senior year transcript from American Christian Academy in Pennsylvania, and he has filed suit against the Big East and NCAA.

Glover, a 6-foot-6 forward from the Bronx, says in his suit that the NCAA never gave a reason for invalidating the transcript.

The suit asks a judge to declare Glover eligible to play, award him the equivalent of four years tuition at Seton Hall, and compensatory damages.

Oregon State Lands Surprise Recruit

Oregon State has landed a surprise verbal commitment on Tuesday from 6-foot-3 guard Roberto Nelson, a top 50 senior from Santa Barbara (Calif.). Nelson had offers from UCLA, Florida, Ohio State, USC, and Tennessee yet really liked Head Coach Craig Robinson over the past few months and is excited for the opportunity to help turnaround the program in Corvalis.

Robinson is the brother of Michelle Obama, wife of presidential nominee Barack Obama.

"I can go there and, hopefully, start right away and help turn the program around," Nelson said. "My goal is to be the [Pac-10] Freshman of the Year."

HOF UTEP Coach Don Haskins Dies At 78

Don Haskins, who was largely credited with helping break color barriers in college sports in 1966 when he used five black starters to win a national basketball title for Texas Western, died Sunday at the age of 78.

Texas-El Paso spokesman Jeff Darby said the Hall of Fame coach died Sunday afternoon.
