Kentucky Expects To Start At Least Three Freshmen

Jun 25, 2012 3:16 PM

John Caliarpi will be replacing the top-six players from Kentucky's 2012 title winning team.

“Well, you won’t believe this, but we’re going to be really young," said Calipari. "Probably end up starting at least three freshmen again. That may be the fourth straight year.”

Calipari called Archie Goodwin a “slasher-scorer” who can play both point guard and shooting guard, “which is going to be vital because when you’re not playing 10 guys — when you’re playing seven or eight — you need guys that can play multiple positions.”

Calipari sees Alex Poythress as being capable of replacing Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

“He’s going to be another wing that runs and can make plays and score the ball,” Calipari said. “He and Willie (Caulie-Stein) both, I don’t think they still understand how good they can be.”

“I feel like it went just as well as my last workout ,” Jenkins said. “That’s what I wanted to come in here and do: play hard, play aggressive and play good defense. I feel like I did that today."

“I’ve gotten wiser through this whole process. You go to different teams and you play against different guys and your competitiveness goes up and it brings the best out in you.”

Jabari Parker's Parents Not Allowing Coaches To Contact Him Directly

Jun 21, 2012 1:12 AM

Jabari Parker's parents are not permitting college coaches to contact him directly.

“Everybody doing their job, but they still can’t have Jabari’s number,” Sonny said on Tuesday. “That ain’t changed.

“We want him to enjoy being who he is. If he wants to talk, we’ll ask him first. Right now, we don’t want him to be over-bombarded because coaches can sometimes be aggressive, and that can be overwhelming.”

Coaches have been reaching out to Parker’s parents in the last week. Sonny said they’ve heard from Duke, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan State, among others.

“I talked to (Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski) the other day,” Sonny said. “He wished me a Happy Father’s Day. My voicemail is filled. It’s been filled for a year.”

Jabari Parker Headlines Finalists For FIBA U17 National Team

Jun 18, 2012 10:35 AM

Jabari Parker was named as one of the 14 finalists for the 2012 USA U-17 World Championship Team.

“Of the four years I’ve been involved with the USA Developmental National Team, I think this has been by far the most competitive camp,” said Don Showalter, USA head coach. “Players came in in great shape. They came in with the idea that they’re going to show what they can do. You look at the roster and you see we have six new faces from last year’s U16 team. That just shows you that some of the guys who didn’t make the team last year used that for motivation to improve their game in order to make this team.”

Parker was voted the 2011 USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year.

Other finalists include: Beejay Anya (DeMatha Catholic H.S. / Gaithersburg, Md.); Joel Berry (Lake Highland Prep School / Apopka, Fla.); Dominique Collier (Denver East H.S. / Denver, Colo.); Stephen Domingo (Saint Ignatius Prep / San Francisco, Calif.); Conner Frankamp (Wichita North H.S. / Wichita, Kan.); Rondaé Jefferson (Chester H.S. / Chester, Pa.); Dakari Johnson (Montverde Academy, Fla. / Brooklyn, N.Y.); Stanley Johnson (Mater Dei H.S. / Fullerton, Calif.); Tyus Jones (Apple Valley H.S. / Apple Valley, Minn.); Kendrick Nunn (Simeon Career Academy / Chicago, Ill.); Jahlil Okafor (Whitney Young H.S. / Chicago, Ill.); Johnathan Williams (Southwind H.S. / Memphis, Tenn.); and Justise Winslow (St. John’s School / Houston, Texas).

Parsons Credits College Experience For Successful Rookie Campaign

Jun 10, 2012 6:31 PM

Chandler Parsons feels he benefited from staying four years at Florida.

“Learning all of these things, how hard to compete, what it takes to win, gave me an advantage over these guys that stayed only one or two years,” Parsons said. “I was mature, ready to play right away and I think that showed because I was able to contribute right away.”

Parsons' ability to create and handle the ball at 6-foot-10 has carried over to the Rockets, who run a similar pick-and-roll offense to Florida.

“Being able to have the ball in my hands at 6-9, 6-10, being able to create, make plays for others, Coach (Billy) Donovan gave me that flexibility the same way (Kevin) McHale did, giving me so much confidence that I was able to go out there and play basketball,” Parsons said. “Coach McHale told me before every game, ‘Just go out there and have fun. It's going to fly by. Just play your game.' ”

Parsons, a second-round pick, started 57 of 66 games.

“Individually I obviously played very well, could have shot the ball a little better,” Parsons said. “I think I adjusted pretty well to the NBA game, the speed, defensively.”
