Myles Turner Puts SMU Back On List As 'Dark Horse'

Feb 20, 2014 8:44 PM

Myles Turner has cut down his list of college choices to Oklahoma State, Kansas, Texas, Ohio State, Duke, Arizona and Kentucky, while SMU has rejoined the mix.

“They weren’t on my list last time, but they are somewhat back in the running now,” Turner told Mustangs Madness in an interview after the visit. “They are kind of like a dark horse so to say. I still have my official list, but SMU is still kind of in the mix.”

Turner is ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the 2014 incoming class.

SMU currently has one commit for the class of 2014 in Emmanuel Mudiay, the No. 5 player in the class of 2014. Turner says that Mudiay and he have discussed the idea of playing together.

“Sometimes I talk to Emmanuel Mudiay about the possibility of playing here with him,” Turner said in the interview. “He hits me up. Recently, Keith Frazier has been hitting me up on Twitter a lot, too. I wouldn’t say it’s anything too serious though. ”

Lamar has fired Pat Knight as head coach.

Lamar has a 3-22 record this season, and Knight had two more seasons on his deal.

"I was told last night to meet with the president and the AD this morning at 10 a.m.,'' Knight said. "I knew it. There's no talk. They said they want to go in a different direction. We struggled for two years. It's all based on the record. It's part of the business."

Michigan State, UNC, Florida, Texas To Play Three-City Barnstorming Tour In 2018

Feb 12, 2014 2:11 PM

Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis has devised a four-team barnstorming event that will include three games over an eight-day period.

Michigan State, North Carolina, Florida and Texas have agreed to play three games, one each in New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles while traveling together on a single chartered airplane in December of 2018.

Hollis said each of the four teams will get a home game against an opponent to be determined later to make this a four-game event and qualify as a multi-team event.

"So many of these kids know each other from AAU and everything else that we felt this would be a great way to travel," Hollis said. "I worked with (ADs) Steve Patterson at Texas, Jeremy Foley at Florida and Bubba Cunnningham at North Carolina on this. They and the head coaches are all excited about the opportunity for the student-athletes."

Rupp Arena To Undergo $310M Renovation

Feb 10, 2014 4:28 PM

Rupp Arena, home of the Kentucky Wildcats, will undergo a $310 million renovation.

Construction could begin in 2015 and the new Rupp could open in 2017.

The exterior of Rupp Arena will include glass or transparent outer walls that allow for more interaction between the street and what’s going on inside, architects have said.

The interior bowl of Rupp Arena will remain largely the same. The upper bowl will have chair-backed seats, better lighting and its own concourse for food and bathrooms. The slope of the upper deck will be less steep, making it easier to negotiate.

The upper bowl will have to be removed and rebuilt, officials said.

Between the upper and lower decks will be a ring of premium seats, including club seating and open seats that will have perks such as personal servers.

Marcus Smart Suspended Three Games For Incident With Fan

Feb 10, 2014 12:31 PM

Marcus Smart has received a three-game suspension for shoving a fan during the final seconds of Oklahoma State's loss at Texas Tech on Saturday.

Officials assessed a technical foul but did not eject him, and he remained on the bench until the final buzzer.

"Mr. Smart's actions were a clear violation of the Big 12 Conference's Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct Policy," Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said in a statement. "Such behavior has no place in athletics, and will not be tolerated. I appreciate the efforts of Oklahoma State University athletics director Mike Holder in addressing this matter, and believe this is an appropriate response to an inappropriate action."

Smart will miss games against Texas, Oklahoma and Baylor.

"I want to apologize to the fan, whose name is Jeff Orr," said Smart. "I want to apologize to him. I want to apologize to my teammates, to my coaching staff, Coach Ford, my family, Oklahoma State University. This is not how I [conduct] myself, this is not how this program is ran. This is not how I was raised. I let my emotions get the best of me.

"Just can't let that happen again. This is a lesson I'll have to learn from. The consequences that are coming with it, I'm taking full responsibility. No finger pointing. This is all upon me.

"I just want to really apologize to those that are very important to me. I feel like I let my teammates down. These guys mean a lot to me. Not to be able to be out there with them, it hits me in my heart. I have a lot of people that look up to me, a lot of little kids, so once again, I truly apologize. This is not me. I really do apologize for it. Like I said, I take full responsibility and the consequences that come with it."

In a statement released through the school, Orr denied using a slur and said he was sorry for calling Smart a "piece of crap."

"I would like to take this opportunity to offer my sincere apologies to Marcus Smart, Oklahoma State, Tubby Smith and the Texas Tech Men's Basketball program," Orr said in a statement. "My actions last night were inappropriate and do not reflect myself or Texas Tech -- a university I love dearly. I regret calling Mr. Smart a 'piece of crap' but I want to make it known that I did not use a racial slur of any kind. Additionally, I would like to offer my apologies to Texas Tech fans that have been embarrassed by the attention this incident has created."
