Michele Roberts Calls Out Daryl Morey's Comments On Ben Simmons

Oct 23, 2021 12:07 PM

In an exclusive statement to Yahoo Sports, NBPA head Michele Roberts took issue with some saying Ben Simmons is using mental health as an excuse for not being ready to play. Roberts also called out Daryl Morey for saying he's prepared to wait out the four years remaining on Simmons' contract before he'll trade him for a less than desired package.

Roberts said, "Really? Is it so hard to believe that Ben’s not mentally at a place to compete? Professional athletes — like the rest of us — have difficult periods in our lives that require time and energy to heal. We have and will continue to provide Ben with the support and resources he needs to work through this. Threatening the prospect of 'another four years' serves no one’s interests. Like Tobias (Harris), I say let’s respect Ben’s space and embrace him while allowing him the time to move forward.

"So, take a breath and count to 10: We are all too good to continue to play this perpetual game of chicken.”

Simmons has recently reported back to the Philadelphia 76ers, but has yet to complete a full practice with the team. He was kicked out of his first practice by Doc Rivers for refusing to take part in drills. Following that, Simmons was suspended for the season opener.

Since that point, Simmons has talked with his teammates and coaches and explained he's not mentally ready to play at this point. He asked for time to get himself ready. Multiple players, including Tobias Harris, have come out in support of him. They've said they'll give him the time and space he needs.

Oct 23, 2021 9:23 AM

Gerald Green has retired and joined the Houston Rockets coaching staff. Green retired after a 15-year playing career that included 13 seasons in the NBA and two seasons overseas.

Green was drafted by the Boston Celtics directly out of high school at the 2005 NBA Draft. Green then went on to average 9.7 points in 658 career games. The Houston native played parts of three different seasons with his hometown Rockets.

As for his new role, Green said, “I’m excited about this. I’ve had a lot of crying nights leading up to this.” Green said Rockets GM Rafael Stone has talked with him about joining the staff for a few years. The former prep-to-pros player will focus on player development with Houston's young team.

Dwight Howard: Beef With Anthony Davis Squashed Immediately

Oct 23, 2021 9:07 AM

During the Los Angeles Lakers loss to the Phoenix Suns on Friday night, cameras caught Anthony Davis and Dwight Howard getting into an altercation on the sideline. Davis was yelling at Howard as both walked towards the bench, while Howard seemingly ignored him. Davis then approached Howard when he sat down. As the two continued to argue, Howard stood up and pushed Davis away. Teammates and coaches then immediately separated the two players.

Following the game, Howard said, "We squashed that then and there. We just had a disagreement about something on the floor."

Multiple times throughout the loss to the Suns, Lakers players could be seen pointing at each other following defensive breakdowns. As they integrate several new players, Los Angeles' defense has not been up to par through two games.

The Brooklyn Nets "have taken incoming calls" from rival teams with trade interest on Kyrie Irving, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Wojnarowski's report surfaces in relation to the Philadelphia 76ers' standoff with a trade of Ben Simmons.

"Daryl Morey has called all over the league, talked to teams about star players everywhere to try to find a deal for Ben Simmons," said Wojnarowski. "One team he has not called, I'm told, is the Brooklyn Nets. He has not lobbed a call to Sean Marks about Kyrie Irving.

"Brooklyn, I'm told, has taken incoming calls from teams on Kyrie Irving. They have not themselves made any calls on Kyrie Irving."

ESPN Reportedly On Verge Of Publishing Story Alleging Misconduct Within Suns' Franchise

Oct 22, 2021 8:49 PM

ESPN is on the verge of publishing a report alleging "racism, sexism and sexual harassment" within the Phoenix Suns.

"The NBA is preparing for a massive story accusing Suns owner Robert Sarver of racism, sexism and sexual harassment in a series of incidents, sources say. With enough evidence to support such claims, there’s a real chance the league would forcibly remove Sarver,'' ESPN's Jordan Schultz said on Twitter.

Robert Sarver preemptively released a segment denying those allegations.

“I am wholly shocked by some of the allegations purported by ESPN about me, personally, or about the Phoenix Suns and Mercury organizations," Sarver said in the statement. "While I can’t begin to know how to respond to some of the vague suggestions made by mostly anonymous voices, I can certainly tell you that some of the claims I find completely repugnant to my nature and to the character of the Suns/Mercury workplace and I can tell you they never, ever happened."

James Jones defended Sarver in a statement.

"None of what’s been said describes the Robert Sarver I know, respect and like – it just doesn’t,” Jones said.

Chandler Parsons Had More Control Over Mavs' Decisions During Tenure Than Donnie Nelson

Oct 22, 2021 2:21 PM

When Chandler Parsons was a member of the Dallas Mavericks, he reportedly played a key role in personnel decisions in consultation with Mark Cuban.

Parsons joined the Mavericks in 2014 on a three-year, $46 million contract.

"Donnie Nelson ultimately won a power struggle after Chandler Parsons was the primary voice in Cuban's ear for a couple of year," said Tim MacMahon on the Brian Windhorst Podcast. "Chandler Parsons had significantly more control over personnel than Donnie Nelson did for two years. That is simply a fact."

Parsons left the Mavericks in 2016 on a four-year, $95 million deal with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Report: Adrian Wojnarowski Sends His Own Social Media Stats To Potential Sources

Oct 22, 2021 12:50 PM

According to a report from Ethan Sherwood Strauss of Substack, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski has sent out a PowerPoint presentation to potential sources highlighting his reach and influence. The documents contain the ESPN logo on each side, which suggest they were made by the company, but they were actually made by CAA.

The documents include claims like, “he is the undisputed top NBA media talent in the business,” and “His combined reach of 7.0M followers across Twitter, Instagram and Facebook is more than every other NBA media personality from the below comp set.”

The report also details a falling apart in Wojnarowski's relationship with his former protege Shams Charania. Wojnarowski and Charania stopped working together in 2017 and are now each other's chief rivals.

"These days, in conversations with potential sources, Wojnarowski communicates a contempt for Charania, disparaging his character," writes Strauss.
