Kobe Nearly Traded To Mavericks In 2007

Aug 22, 2012 1:49 PM

The Mavericks nearly acquired Kobe Bryant in a trade with the Lakers in 2007, according to an interview Mark Cuban had on Tuesday.

“When I was doing Dancing with the Stars, I was taking breaks because I was talking to Kobe’s agent because Kobe wanted to get traded,” Cuban said. “Literally, between Dancing with the Stars practices I had thought we traded for Kobe Bryant. I even talked to their owner and thought we were going to have done deal, and [Lakers GM] Mitch Kupchak changed [Kobe’s] mind and brought him back.”

Dallas would not have traded Dirk Nowitzki for Bryant, which would have left Jason Terry, Jerry Stackhouse, Devin Harris, Erick Dampier, Josh Howard and draft picks as possible pieces.

Bryant was seeking a trade during the 2007 offseason.

Dumars Looking To Bolster Pistons Backcourt

Aug 20, 2012 10:48 PM

Joe Dumars is considering ways to add depth to the Pistons’ backcourt.

As of Monday, Detroit’s roster lists Brandon Knight, Rodney Stuckey, Will Bynum and rookie Kim English as the team's only guards.

“I would feel comfortable (with the status quo), but it’s something we’re trying to address, as well,” Dumars said. “We continue to look to shuffle one or two spots on our roster to give it more balance.”

Dumars has reason to believe teams are looking to make trades between now and the opening of training camp.

“I do get the sense that there are more teams trying to impact their rosters through the month of August, which historically has been a slow period,” he said. “In the conversations I’m having and the amount of teams I’m talking to in what is a traditionally slow time, it’s not that right now. For whatever reason, I don’t know, but it is the case. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more moves happen.”

Rockets Offered Less For Dwight Howard Than Reported

Aug 15, 2012 6:28 PM

The Rockets attempted to acquire either Dwight Howard or Andrew Bynum, but they were unwilling to give up as much via trade as has been previously reported.

Houston was only offering two first round picks, though one would have come from the Raptors and has protections to make it more likely to be a lottery selection.

Many had assumed the Rockets were also offering all three first round picks from 2012, but only Jeremy Lamb had been formally made available.

Houston would only offer two players from a group that included Marcus Morris, Patrick Patterson, Jeremy Lamb, Terrence Jones, Royce White and Donatas Motiejunas.

The Rockets also offered cap relief, but never the type that the Magic sought.

"I enjoyed working with Rob on a potential deal," Daryl Morey told SI.com via text message. "He went with what was best for Orlando and over time people will see that he has made a good decision. He has a plan for Orlando and he has proved his ability to execute a plan to make franchises great from his time in San Antonio and Oklahoma City."

Source: Magic Had 'Animosity' Dealing With Nets On Howard Trade

Aug 11, 2012 12:10 PM

The Nets attempted to trade for Dwight Howard in December, March and again in July, offering a package centered around Brook Lopez, Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks and four unprotected first round picks.

Brooklyn also would have taken back the contracts of Jason Richardson, Chris Duhon and Earl Clark, who were ultimately included in the four-team trade.

A source says the Nets and Magic had animosity in their trade talks due to Orlando's contention that Brooklyn illegally contacted Howard in December without permission.

The Nets deny meeting with Howard and the Magic have never filed charges with the NBA.

Magic Were 'Apprehensive' About Potentially Dealing Dwight Howard To Hawks

Aug 10, 2012 5:58 PM

Danny Ferry and the Hawks pursued a trade for Dwight Howard.

“We had discussions with Orlando about Dwight Howard,” Ferry said. “They were apprehensive to trade him within the division.”

Howard is originally from the Atlanta area and Ferry presumably could have offered a package centered around Al Horford.

Dwight Howard Traded To Lakers

Aug 10, 2012 2:07 PM

The Magic have finally traded Dwight Howard.

Orlando has acquired Aaron Afflalo and Al Harrington from Denver, Maurice Harkless and Nikola Vucevic from Philadelphia, as well as Josh McRoberts and Christian Eyenga from the Los Angeles Lakers.

In addition, the Magic have also acquired five additional draft picks over the next five years. Orlando receives: a second round pick from Denver in 2013, a first round pick from either Denver or New York in 2014, a conditional first round pick from Philadelphia and a conditional second round pick from the L.A. Lakers in 2015, and a conditional first round pick from the L.A. Lakers in 2017.

The Magic traded Howard, Chris Duhon and Earl Clark to the Lakers, while sending Jason Richardson to Philadelphia. As part of the deal, Philadelphia has acquired Andrew Bynum, while Denver has acquired Andre Iguodala.

“A primary goal for our basketball team is to achieve sustainability while maintaining a long-term vision. We feel this deal puts us in a position to begin building in that direction,” said Magic GM Rob Hennigan. “In addition to the six players joining our team, we will be in a position to maximize our salary cap flexibility in the near future, as well as utilize the multiple draft picks we have acquired going forward.”

“Dwight Howard accomplished tremendous success on and off the court during his eight years in Orlando,” said Hennigan. “We wish him, Chris (Duhon), Earl (Clark) and Jason (Richardson) all the best in the future.”

“We’d like to thank Andrew for all he’s done for the team and the organization,” said Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak. “Andrew has been with us since we drafted him at seventeen years old and over the last seven years we have watched him develop into an All-Star player who has helped the team win two NBA Championships. He’s a special talent with a bright future. We appreciate all of his contributions and wish him well for the remainder of his career.”

“It’s not often you get the opportunity to improve your team by adding an All-Star player like Andre Iguodala,” said Nuggets GM Masai Ujiri said. “He’s an Olympian, a great defender and a great all-around player. We think he fits in really well with the type of system coach George Karl runs and the team we have here in Denver.”

"I’m excited to be heading to Denver,” Iguodala said. “I have a great relationship with (team president) Josh Kroenke, and I really respect what he and Masai have built with the Nuggets. They’re a great young team with an excellent coaching staff, led by Coach Karl. I also feel like I will really complement their system and roster, both offensively and defensively."

"We are very excited to welcome Andrew Bynum, one of the league's best, young centers, and Jason Richardson, a proven, respected veteran, to the Philadelphia 76ers," said Managing Owner Josh Harris. "As we stated from the outset, our ownership group is committed to exploring every option available to us in order to improve our team. This trade is the culmination of a very active off-season, one that we believe positions the Sixers for success this season and for many years to come."

Afflalo Pleased About Trade To Magic

Aug 10, 2012 10:45 AM

Aaron Afflalo responded with enthusiasm at the likelihood of playing in Orlando.

Denver has reportedly agreed to send Afflalo and Al Harrington to the Magic as part of a complicated four team trade.

“Yeah, I'm happy,” Afflalo said. “I just wanted to thank the Denver organization, the teammates that you play with, the fans, but I think it's a great opportunity there in Orlando from a player standpoint. With the coaching change and the management change, I think it's a great time to be a part of the organization.”

Afflalo expects to have a bigger role with the Magic next season.

“Of course,” Afflalo said. “I plan on being the best player I can be, period. I'd love to continue to grow as a person and as a player offensively and defensively. Personally I don't think there's a better place to do it at this time than Orlando.”

Rockets Offered Multiple Recent Picks, Future Picks, $12M In Cap Space For Howard

Aug 10, 2012 10:21 AM

The Magic decided to send Dwight Howard to the Lakers in a four-team trade instead of offers from both the Rockets and Nets.

Houston's final offer was $12 million in immediate cap space instead of Arron Afflalo and Al Harrington, several of their recent first round selections, along with future lottery and unprotected draft picks.

The Rockets were unwilling to take back any bad contracts in return while dealing for Howard.
