Lakers Were More Interested In Signing Kyrie Irving Outright Than Trade Scenario

Jun 28, 2022 11:30 AM

The Los Angeles Lakers were far more motivated to sign Kyrie Irving as a free agent than they were in acquiring him via trade, sources tell Shams Charania of The Athletic.

The Lakers could only sign Irving to a $6.5 million contract if he would have become a free agent. For the Lakers to acquire Irving via trade, they would have had to attach significant draft compensation.

Irving's decision to return to the Brooklyn Nets on his opt-in crystalized as he went through his opt-in-and-trade options as well as the free agency path with the Lakers.

The Detroit Pistons, San Antonio Spurs, Orlando Magic, Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks are the only teams with cap space this offseason to sign Irving and that group has prioritized other options.

Russell Westbrook Exercises $47.1M Option With Lakers

Jun 28, 2022 11:12 AM

Russell Westbrook will exercise his $47.1 million player option with the Los Angeles Lakers for the 22-23 season.

Westbrook was widely expected to exercise the option.

Westbrook's future with the Lakers is uncertain after a disappointing 21-22 season. The Lakers have hoped that a coaching change could help Westbrook become a more productive part of the team.

Kevin Durant Was 'Very Loyal' To Kyrie Irving Throughout Standoff With Nets

Jun 28, 2022 8:29 AM

Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving joined the Brooklyn Nets in 2019 and appear set to remain with the franchise this offseason, albeit with less control than they had previously after Irving was unable to secure a long-term, guaranteed deal.

Irving threatened to leave the Nets if they didn't sign him long-term, but he ultimately decided to opt-in to his $36.5 million contract. Durant appears to have tried to facilitate Irving's leverage by "mulling" his future with the Nets.

"I think Kevin Durant was very loyal to Kyrie Irving through this process," said Adrian Wojnarowski. "Certainly, he wanted to create the idea that if Kyrie Irving walked, Kevin Durant might ask for a trade. In the end, the leveraging on Irving's side just didn't allow for him to get the kind of new deal he wanted.

"Now, Kevin Durant has what he did want: Kyrie Irving back on the Nets for this season. The expectation right now is that Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving will move forward for the Nets on this roster this year. But Kevin Durant hasn't talked yet. He hasn't expressed that publicly. This is the outcome he wanted: Irving back on the Nets."

The Nets appeared to reach a point with Irving where they preferred the scenario of trading away Durant rather than commit long-term to Irving.

Insiders Don't Believe Kyrie Irving Situation With Nets Over

Jun 28, 2022 8:18 AM

Kyrie Irving exercised his option with the Brooklyn Nets for the 22-23 season, which momentarily ends his stand off with the franchise after he was unable to leverage the threat of leaving into a long-term, guaranteed contract.

"I think it turned down the heat in at least kept the Nets with two star players, with all of their options for next year alive," said Brian Windhorst. "And, boy, was that not what some people, agents and executives thought. They don't think this is over.

"Now, Kyrie tried to make it sound like it was over. 'I'll see you in the fall' sounds like it's over."

Irving didn't inform the Nets of his decision before it was reported by Shams Charania.

"I was told the option pick up came as a total surprise to the Nets," said Windhorst. They found out when everybody else did."

One path available to Irving has been to opt into his contract with the Nets and attempt to be traded at a later date.

"I don't know if anything has changed," said Windhorst. "The people I talk to in the league are skeptical that Kyrie is going to be all for one and one for all on this."

Kevin Durant Has Yet To Request Trade From Nets

Jun 27, 2022 4:21 PM

Kevin Durant has yet to request a trade, sources tell ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The future of Durant with the Nets has suddenly become a question as the team has been unwilling to satisfy the contract demands of Kyrie Irving. Durant and Irving joined the Nets together in 2019.

Numerous teams are preparing to pursue Durant should he become available.

The Nets have been reluctant to offer Irving a long-term contract, which is what he has wanted to remain with Brooklyn. Irving has until Wednesday to make a decision on his $36.5 million player option.

Lakers Believed To Be Only Team Pursuing Kyrie Irving Sign-And-Trade

Jun 27, 2022 12:30 PM

The Los Angeles Lakers are the only known team planning a pursuit of Kyrie Irving via sign-and-trade, sources tell Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

The Brooklyn Nets, however, are not believed to have interest in any of the packages made available by the Lakers. The Lakers could conceivably bring in a third team to help build a package that satisfies Brooklyn, who risk losing Irving for nothing.

Irving has until Wednesday to make a decision on his $36 million player option. If Irving declines the option, he could sign with the Lakers for their $6 million exception.

LeBron James and Irving are believed to both be amenable to a reunion.

Nets Give Kyrie Irving Permission To Seek Sign-And-Trade

Jun 27, 2022 12:17 PM

The Brooklyn Nets have granted Kyrie Irving permission to seek sign-and-trade scenarios ahead of his potential free agency, sources tell Kristian Winfield of the New York Daily News.

The Nets have been unwilling to offer Irving a contract with significant long-term financial guarantees as they do not believe he is committed to doing what it takes to be on the floor consistently.

Irving has six teams on his wish list in the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers and Dallas Mavericks.

The Knicks, Mavericks and Heat are the teams that have the biggest capacity to pull off a deal for Irving.

The Lakers would almost certainly need to include Russell Westbrook in a sign-and-trade for Irving. Westbrook ending up reuniting with Kevin Durant on the Nets is unlikely.

John Collins 'Done In Atlanta' As Hawks Look For Trade

Jun 26, 2022 10:03 AM

John Collins wasn't traded during the 2022 NBA Draft, as many expected. But don't expect Collins to remain with the Atlanta Hawks much longer, either.

The Hawks are continuing their effort to find a new home for Collins. It's widely expected that Collins will be traded this offseason. Atlanta is looking to clear salary and Collins and the Hawks appear ready for a breakup.

“He’s done in Atlanta,” a source close to Collins told The Athletic.

Collins averaged 16.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and a block per game for the Hawks last season. He shot 52.6% from the field, including 36.4% on three-pointers. Collins has four years and $102 million left on the five-year deal he signed with the Hawks in the summer of 2021.

Thunder Likely To Re-Trade JaMychal Green

Jun 25, 2022 9:22 PM

The Oklahoma City Thunder have continued in asset-collection mode while in their rebuild. That includes recently trading for JaMychal Green while swapping the #30 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft for a first-round pick that is likely to be better down the line.

Now, the Thunder are likely to re-trade JaMychal Green, per GM Sam Presti.

Presti said that Oklahoma City values Green as a player. But Presti added that where the Thunder are in their rebuild, it makes sense for Green to be moved on to another team.

Green averaged 6.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in 16.2 minutes per game off the bench for the Denver Nuggets last season. Denver traded Green and his expiring $8.2 million contract to Oklahoma City at the draft to lessen their luxury tax bill for next season.

Teams Preparing For Contingency Of Kevin Durant Becoming Available In Trade

Jun 24, 2022 3:19 PM

Kevin Durant has begun to mull his future with the Brooklyn Nets amid the team's contract impasse with Kyrie Irving. If the Nets were to allow Irving to leave without any compensation in return, they could fall completely out of title contention.

"I can tell you this," said Zach Lowe. "This is what teams are doing. Teams are already operating under the... not the assumption, but we need to prepare for the contingency Kevin Durant is available via trade in six days, or seven days."

Durant signed an extension with the Nets during the 2021 offseason and has four seasons remaining on his contract.

"Every team in the league has to at least have a meeting about what we should offer for Kevin Durant," said Lowe.
