Hornets Only Received Lottery-Protected Offers For Kemba Walker

Sep 12, 2019 11:21 AM

The Charlotte Hornets only offered Kemba Walker $160 million over five years, approximately $60 million less than his max after earning All-NBA honors.

Walker didn't demand the full supermax from the Hornets.

“We had great years with him, and we didn’t get into the playoffs,” Mitch Kupchak said. “What makes us think that next year (would) be different?”

“I’ve got to step back and look at where we’ve been and where we’re going. Chart out a course that gives us the best chance to build something that is sustainable for more than a year or two.”

Kupchak also defended the Hornets against criticism that they should have traded Walker rather than letting him leave in free agency as he signed with the Boston Celtics.

“Almost every offer revolved around draft picks. It was always lottery-protected.,” Kupchak said. “When you do something like that, you’re saying you’re going to draft a player in the teens, we don’t know how good he’s going to be, and it’s going to take three or four years (to realize value). We wanted to keep Kemba — under the right conditions.”

Rockets Turn Nene's Contract Into Potential $10M Trade Chip With Creative Bonuses

Sep 11, 2019 8:17 PM

The Houston Rockets signed Nene to a creative contract that will give the team flexibility using his contract on the trade market after January 15th.

Nene signed a two-year, $20 million deal, but the base compensation for 19-20 is $2.56 million with $7.44 million in likely bonuses, which brings his cap hit to $10 million this season. The full $10 million cap number can be used in a trade.

The bonuses in his contract are as follows:

1. $2.435 million for playing in at least 50 games with the Rockets winning 52 or more games.

2. $2.5 million for playing at least 25 games and the Rockets winning 52 or more games.

3. $2.5 million for playing at least 40 games and the Rockets winning 52 or more games.

Because Nene played in 42 games last season and the Rockets won 53 games, it is considered a likely bonus.

The $2.69 million in base compensation for the 20-21 season if Nene is not waived by February 15th.

Wizards Publicly Reiterate Desire To Keep Bradley Beal Long-Term

Sep 11, 2019 4:30 PM

The Washington Wizards have been resistant to trade offers on Bradley Beal.

Beal will become a free agent in 2021 if he doesn't sign an extension before then.

"The way that I look at this is pretty simple: If you were looking to build a team, Brad would be the type of player anyone would want to start with," Tommy Sheppard told CBS Sports. "You look at the character, the talent, the age, just the whole package ... Brad is without a doubt a core player in this league. Every team would love to have him, and we do. So we've never considered anything other than a situation where Brad is with us and leading us forward. We made that clear to him on the first day we could offer him an extension, and we'll continue to make that clear."

Windhorst: Executives Expect Thunder To Say That They Will Not Trade Chris Paul

Aug 21, 2019 1:44 AM

Brian Windhorst, Royce Young and Tim MacMahon discussed how the Oklahoma City Thunder plan to forward with Chris Paul on "The Jump."

Windhorst and Young thought that Sam Presti is looking for a first-round pick in return for Paul.

"Here's what executives expect to happen: they expect the Thunder to put out a message that we're not looking to trade Chris Paul...We want him to work with our young guys. Because they don't want anybody to think they're panic-trying to trade him, and they want to hope that somebody has something happen where they need Chris Paul," said Windhorst.

Young added that he thinks the Thunder would likely hold onto Paul rather than giving up a pick in a potential deal.
