J.J. Redick Voices Displeasure With Pelicans For Trade To Mavericks

Mar 31, 2021 2:39 PM

J.J. Redick spoke on his podcast about his displeasure with the New Orleans Pelicans for trading him to the Dallas Mavericks.

Holiday revealed he asked for a trade before the start of the season and that David Griffin promised to oblige him if the situation didn't work out during the season.

"Obviously, he did not honor his word," said Redick of Griffin.

"I don't think you're going to get honesty from that front office, objectively speaking," added Redick. "That's not an opinion, I just don't think you're gonna get that. I don't think what happened with me is necessarily an isolated incident. I think front offices around the league operate in their best interest. I get that. I understand that. Truthfully... I think I was a little naive thinking I was in Year 15 and I attempted to do things right throughout my career.

"But in terms of this front office, yeah, it's not something where I would expect certainly the agents who worked on this with me to ever trust that front office again."

Redick was "jarred" by the trade to the Mavericks as they weren't one of the teams discussed with him. Redick has no set timetable for reporting to the Mavericks.

Warriors Rejected Brooklyn's Offer Of Spencer Dinwiddie For Kelly Oubre

Mar 30, 2021 4:46 PM

The Brooklyn Nets offered Spencer Dinwiddie to the Golden State Warriors in a trade package for Kelly Oubre.

The Warriors rejected the offer as they continue to seek a playoff berth. Golden State evaluated numerous trade scenarios involving Oubre, but none materialized that would also help them in the short-term.

Dinwiddie is out for the season and can become a free agent in the offseason.

“I think a lot of people thought he might be available, but we value him, too, as evidenced by not trading him,” Bob Myers said of Oubre last week.

Marc Gasol Will Lose Starting Job To Andre Drummond, Lakers Unlikely To Waive Him

Mar 30, 2021 4:12 PM

The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to start Andre Drummond at center over Marc Gasol, sources tell Jovan Buha of The Athletic.

Frank Vogel declined to go into any detail about any conversations the Lakers had with Drummond about his role before they signed him.

“I have talked to him personally,” Vogel said. “He’s really excited about this situation. I don’t want to go too far into the nature of those private conversations other than to say that he’s really excited — probably excited as we are. I think our team got a lot better.”

Either way, Drummond is expected to receive less playing time and touches with the Lakers than he did with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Gasol is unlikely to be waived by the Lakers, sources tell The Athletic.

Bulls Would Need To Do Renegotiation And Extend To Sign Zach LaVine Long-Term In 2021

Mar 30, 2021 3:05 PM

Zach LaVine will be a free agent in 2022 and the Chicago Bulls are limited in what they can offer him in an extension due to his four-year, $78 million deal. LaVine is making $19.5 million this season and will make $19.5 million the next.

"Because of that contract, because they can only build off that [$19.5 million] number, even if he wants to extend, he can only extend for four years and $105 million, which would be tens of millions of dollars less than his maximum salary," said Brian Windhorst on his podcast. "So I think it is unlikely LaVine extends this summer. Unless... Unless, the Bulls do a renegotiation and extend.

"This is rare in the NBA. You take salary cap space and instead of spending it on a free agent, you give it to a guy currently under contract and boost his salary up. So if he's scheduled to make $19.5 million next year. Let's say the Bulls had $10 million in salary cap space, they could him that extra $10 million, bump up his salary to $29 million and then extend off that. They could give him four years off of that. Now, you're talking about a contract in the $150 million to $160 million range. It would be a $40 million to $50 million difference."

Windhorst also referenced how Jimmy Butler wanted the Minnesota Timberwolves to do this for him in 2018.

Lakers Offered Dennis Schroder Full Amount Allowed On Extension

Mar 30, 2021 4:39 PM

Dennis Schroder is scheduled to become a free agent with the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason and he appears unlikely to sign an extension during the season.

A report before the deadline indicated the Lakers and Schroder were far apart on extension talks.

"What is going to happen with Dennis Schroder and the Lakers long-term here?" said Brian Windhorst on his podcast. "They were absolutely offering him for Kyle Lowry last week. And here's the thing: so Schroder became eligible to sign a contract extension in late February, so at least a month now. From what I understand, they've had contract talks and they couldn't agree to an extension. Now, the most that Schroder could extend for under his current contract, because when you extend a contract, you're under some limit on how much you can get a raise. The maximum he can sign for is four years and $84 million if he totally maxes out what he's able to do on an extension. That is very close to the contract Fred VanVleet signed with the Toronto Raptors last offseason."

The Lakers may have already offered Schroder the full amount allowed on an extension.

"What I've been told and this rumor is pretty widely out there so I doubt it's very surprising, is that the Lakers did indeed offer him that $84 million over four years. Now, this is where we get in a gray area. Was it fully guaranteed? Was it partially guaranteed? Were there incentives? Blah, blah, blah. But I believe he was offered a contract in that realm and he said 'no' to that extension. And the Lakers subsequently offered him in trade for Kyle Lowry.

"What does this mean for Schroder coming out of this season? There is not going to be a deep free agent market for point guards. There are going to be a number of teams out there who need to sign them."

Marc Stein of the New York Times also reported on Tuesday that Schroder rejected a four-year deal worth approximately $80 million.

Evan Fournier Not Ready To Think About Free Agency With Celtics

Mar 30, 2021 1:48 PM

While Danny Ainge expressed optimism of the Boston Celtics' ability to re-sign Evan Fournier this offseason, the newly acquired wing isn't ready to talk about his free agency.

“Obviously yes but that’s not my focus at all, to be honest,” Fournier said. “My focus right now is just to learn the plays, learn how to play with my teammate, and win games. Obviously, if I can have success here and help the team win and have an impact on winning, that’s too forward. I like to stay in the present, stay in the moment. Just help the team win tonight.”

“We had an obvious need for another wing that can do what he does, and we’re fortunate he’s with us, and he’s on our team,” Brad Stevens said. “So I got a chance to go over to the gym yesterday while he was shooting around when we got back and then this morning we went through some stuff prior to our shoot around, we shot around as a team for 30 minutes, so he’s gotten the crash course in a very short amount of time.

“He’s a veteran. He’s been there, done that. He’s played against us, you know, tons of times, probably knows our plays as well as anybody, and certainly we just want him to play to his strengths and not worry about anything else.”

Rafael Stone 'Not Second-Guessing' James Harden Trade 'For A Moment'

Mar 29, 2021 8:55 PM

The trade package the Houston Rockets received for James Harden has come under scrutiny since the trade deadline in which they received very little in return for Victor Oladipo. Rafael Stone, however, continues to believe in the trade package he selected.

The Rockets received three first-round picks from the Nets, a first-round pick from the Bucks, and the option to switch draft position in four drafts in exchange for Harden. Houston also essentially chose to take on Oladipo instead of Caris LeVert.

“Given the types (of draft picks) we got back like, it feels like you can’t possibly know how you did for multiple years, like five, something like that,” Stone said. “But I feel good about it. I would for sure 100 percent do that deal again. There’s literally no part of me regrets doing that deal. I am not second-guessing it for a moment.

“Being in a position to not have to be bad, there’s some other things we’ve done to help that, too, but it’s primarily that deal that’s allowed us to say, ‘Hey, we want to compete on a slightly quicker time frame.’ We’re not going to go down this path of trying to intentionally lose games for years on end.”

Stone also pushed back on the narrative that any of the deals was directed by Tilman Fertitta.

“No offense to my boss, he doesn’t really have (a role) in a deal like this,” Stone said. “I do my very best to be a constant contact with Tilman, telling him about the direction we’re trying to go in … and I want him to feel very, very comfortable about our processes. Tilman is a deal guy. He’s super valuable to me as a resource.

“In terms of actual players? No. He leaves that up to us.”

Stone also talked about Houston's pursuit of a title over the past several years has contributed to their current state.

“I’m completely unapologetic about that,” Stone said, “Organizationally, for the last five or six years, maybe the longer, we’ve been all in every year, and given the players we’ve had, the place that our roster has been, the team construct we had, I think we did the right thing.

“That’s how we find ourselves in the position where we are today. There’s consequences to that. We’re kind of living those consequences.”
