Donald Sterling Banned For Life By NBA, Fined Max Amount, Will Be Forced To Sell

Apr 29, 2014 11:41 PM

Donald Sterling has been banned for life as owner of the Los Angeles Clippers.

Sterling has also been fined $2.5 million, the maximum amount allowed under the NBA constitution.

Adam Silver will also urge the NBA owners to force a sale of the franchise. Silver spoke to several NBA owners and he's confident he has their full support.

"As part of the lifetime ban, Mr. Sterling may not attend any NBA games or practices, be present at any Clippers office or facility, or participate in any business or player personnel decisions involving the team," said Silver. "He will also be barred from attending NBA Board of Governors meetings and participating in any other league activity."

The lifetime ban is independent of a sale of the team.

Recorded remarks of a racial nature made by Sterling were released to the media over the weekend.

Sterling is the longest tenured owner in the NBA.

Sterling has a long history of racism and discrimination as owner of the Clippers and as a real estate businessman.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports that a bidding war for the Clippers is expected to exceed $1 billion for the franchise.

Magic Johnson and Guggenheim Partners are expected to be one of the bidders for the Clippers.

Mark Medina of the Los Angeles Daily News reported that Larry Ellison will again bid for an NBA team.

Entertainment mogul David Geffen was interested in purchasing the Clippers in 2010.

The suspension will begin immediately.

A source says Calathes tested positive for Tamoxifen, which was part of an over-the-counter athletic supplement he had used.

The NBA's lab results showed no traces of testosterone or PED in the supplement.

"There was no intent here," said a league source.

Larry Sanders Advocates For Medical Benefits Of Marijuana

Apr 5, 2014 1:04 AM

Larry Sanders will abide by the terms of his five-game suspension for violating the NBA/NBPA anti-drug program, but defends marijuana for its medical benefits.

“It’s something I feel strongly about, just to let you know something personal about me,” Sanders told NBA.com and the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel prior to the Bucks’ game against Chicago at United Center Friday. “I will deal with the consequences from it. It’s a banned substance in my league. But I believe in marijuana and the medical side of it.

“I know what it is if I’m going to use it. I study it and I know the benefits it has. In a lot of ways we’ve been deprived. You can’t really label it with so many other drugs that people can be addicted to and have so many negative effects on your body and your family and your relationships and impairment. This is not the same thing.”

Sanders’ suspension means he has failed three tests in his career.

Sanders said he was out for the rest of the season, which could push his suspension to the start of the 14-15 season.

Sanders views marijuana as similar to drinking alcohol.

“The great thing about that idea is that, then you could get prescribed for it and see a doctor and they could tell you,” he said. “You don’t have to self-medicate, you don’t have to over-medicate ourselves. Y’know, because we don’t know now. We can’t diagnose ourselves.

“Once it becomes legal … you sit down with a doctor and [he says], ‘You may need this three times a day. This dosage here.’ And you don’t over-medicate. It [addresses] those needs medically that you need. It’s natural.”
