Stoudemire's Back Still Recovering, Chances Of Playing Abroad 'High'

Jul 26, 2011 12:44 AM

Amar’e Stoudemire suffered a back injury prior to Game 2 of the Knicks' first-round series with Boston in April and has yet to be cleared for basketball related activities.

"Right now, all I can do is rest," Stoudemire said. "There's no rehab right now -- no cardio, no weightlifting, nothing. They say the best thing for me right now is another three weeks of rest, nothing else."

After initially saying he would not play overseas in the event of a lockout, Stoudemire is now listening to offers from foreign clubs.

"All the clubs have called the office inquiring about me," Stoudemire said. "Teams from Israel, China, Turkey, Spain. A lot of countries have been calling."

Stoudemire pegged his chances as "high" of playing overseas during the lockout.

“I just want to make sure I'm healthy and totally 100 percent before I make that type of commitment,” Stoudemire said. “As of right now, we're not entertaining offers. I'm still trying to get (my back) right."

David West Aiming For October Return

Jul 25, 2011 7:01 PM

David West is doing in Raleigh, N.C., as he continues his recovery from a torn ACL in his left leg suffered last March 24 in Salt Lake City.

Two to three times a day, five or six days a week, West is at the Athletic Performance Center in Raleigh, making rapid progress in his return.

After his last visit two weeks ago to New York to see Dr. David Altchek, who performed the surgery, West's prognosis is now that he'd be ready for the start of the 2011-12 season -- if it starts on time.

"The way I'm looking at it, by October, I should be fully healthy," West said Monday morning. "When I go see Dr. Altchek in October, he should be giving me clearance to go out there and do my thing."

Marquis Daniels Progressing From Spinal Surgery

Jul 25, 2011 10:35 AM

Former Celtics swingman Marquis Daniels underwent spine surgery in late March and agent Mark Bartelstein said Sunday that Daniels could eventually be healthier than ever with the issue alleviated. The NBA lockout might soon be the only detriment to resuming his basketball career.

In a move designed to free roster space, the Celtics traded Daniels to the Sacramento Kings in February for a conditional future second-round pick (one that Boston is unlikely to see as it's top 55 protected). After re-signing with Boston last offseason, Daniels is an unrestricted free agent for the third straight summer, but Bartelstein stressed how Daniels enjoyed his time in Boston when not injured (a thumb injury limited him during the 2009-10 campaign).

"Marquis loved Boston, [coach] Doc [Rivers], and his teammates," said Bartelstein. "Those guys all visited him after his surgery and that meant a lot to him."

Roy Encouraged By Progress, Ready To Earn Starting Spot

Jul 24, 2011 12:37 PM

Brandon Roy said he had mixed results recently after resuming basketball drills.

The bad news? He says he doesn't have the same lift on his jumps as he did during his run of three All-Star appearances. The good news is that he has surprised himself with his mobility, and he has been free of pain and swelling. Plus, his knees feel stronger than they did during the season -- in part because of the nearly three months since the season ended and in part because the January surgeries are even further in the past.

"I'm not going to put a limit on anything,” Roy said. “People ask, 'Are you going to come off the bench?' Got to wait and see. When training camp comes, I'm going to work, and that way I will put myself in a position to give myself a chance. But I don't want to put myself in a position where I'm saying, 'I'm going to come off the bench.' Or, 'I'm going to start.'

"I just want to go out there and play, and that way, Coach can say, 'Wow, he looks this way.' Or ,'Wow, maybe not' ... Then we will go from there."

Pietrus To Undergo Knee Surgery

Jul 15, 2011 10:11 AM

Suns swingman Mickael Pietrus  will undergo minor right knee surgery Tuesday, and as a result will not follow through with plans to play for France in the European Championship starting Aug. 31.

Pietrus missed the final 12 games of the season because of a quadriceps-tendon strain near the same knee, an issue that seemed to start when he landed after an attempted blocked shot on March 23. Pietrus' agent, Bill McCandless, said Pietrus was mentioning discomfort with the knee before he was traded from Orlando in December. At his recent camp in Guadeloupe, friends were telling McCandless that Pietrus was not moving well.

"I'm looking at it extremely positively," McCandless said. "I know the player well and I sensed something wasn't right. He's not a complainer."

Pietrus took a physical upon arrival for France's camp, but the national team recommended he undergo surgery to remove loose cartilage. He is expected to be out of basketball action for four weeks.

Rondo Still Recovering From Dislocated Elbow

Jul 14, 2011 10:16 AM

It's been two months since Rajon Rondo dislocated his left elbow in the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Rondo's still rehabbing, trying to return to peak physical form.

"It's the most pain I've ever been in playing ball," Rondo said. "I'm feeling a little pain now, but the swelling is down. The only thing is there's swelling in my joint. I'll be fine, it just takes time. I've got a couple more weeks that I'm off, as far as rest and the repetition of weights."

Amar'e Interested In China Tour If He Can Get Insured

Jul 3, 2011 12:38 PM

Amar'e Stoudemire will consider joining Kobe Bryant on a tour of China if the NBA lockout extends into the regular season.

Stoudemire would only play, however, if he can be insured in case of injury.

Stoudemire's contract with the Knicks could not be insured because of a pre-existing knee injury and also due to his surgery for a detached retina.

Kobe Also Experimenting With Cryotherapy Treatment

Jul 1, 2011 5:55 PM

Kobe Bryant underwent a derivation of platelet-rich plasma therapy, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, although PRP is increasingly common among athletes now as a low-risk way to speed healing.

Portland Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy has had PRP done on his hamstring and both his his knees, for example, and Blazers teammate Wesley Matthews just opted for PRP for his problematic ankle.

Bryant also visited the Bayer 04 soccer club’s new rehab center in early June to try out whole body cryotherapy, sitting in a chamber that dropped to minus-166 degrees Fahrenheit.

The goal is for the body to fight inflammation and feel invigorated by the process, which is somewhat like a fuller scale ice bath — and the device is currently not available in the United States.

Kobe Underwent PRP Procedure To Strengthen Knee

Jul 1, 2011 9:22 AM

Lakers guard Kobe Bryant has taken an unusual step to try to strengthen his ailing right knee, undergoing an innovative procedure in Germany about a month ago, according to four people familiar with the situation who were not authorized to speak publicly.

The treatment is a derivation of platelet-rich plasma therapy. PRP procedures are less invasive than many surgeries involving the knee and are viewed as either an emerging solution to knee problems or a financial gamble on unproven science.

Bryant, who turns 33 next month, has been bothered in recent seasons by an arthritic joint in his right knee. He has undergone three other knee procedures since 2003, including surgery last July to remove unspecified loose bodies.

He sat out an overwhelming majority of the Lakers' practices this past season and saw his scoring, shooting percentage and minutes decrease in his 15th NBA season.
