Thabo Sefolosha Making Progress In Return From Broken Fibula

Jul 30, 2015 11:40 AM

With DeMarre Carroll leaving the Atlanta Hawks this offseason, Thabo Sefolosha figures to replace him at small forward in the starting lineup if he can recover from his broken right fibula.

Sefolosha was injured while being arrested by New York City Police in April 8th. Sefolosha had surgery for the broken leg and ligament damage on April 16 with an estimated time of recovery of six months. That timeframe should allow him back in the middle of training camp.

“I am doing better every day,” Sefolosha told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “The leg and ankle are feeling good but it is too early to say exactly when I’ll be back on the court.”

Sefolosha appeared in 52 games for the Hawks before the season-ending injury and averaged 5.3 points and 4.3 rebounds in 18.8 minutes a game.

Jared Dudley Undergoes Surgery To Repair Herniated Disc

Jul 21, 2015 7:26 PM

The Washington Wizards announced that forward Jared Dudley had successful surgery to repair a herniated disc in his lower back.

Dudley will begin the rehab process immediately and is expected to return in approximately three to four months.

“During our discussions with Jared and his agent, Mark Bartelstein, we were made aware that he played with pain for a significant part of last season due to this injury,” said Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld.  “After jointly consulting with our team doctors and several specialists, we collectively determined that this proactive approach was the best course of action to have him ready for the upcoming season and to prevent the risk of further injury.”

The procedure was performed by Dr. Drew Dossett in Dallas, TX.  Dudley missed four games last season due to a sore lower back in addition to playing through pain caused by the injury.

“Although I’m disappointed that I won’t be on the floor with my new teammates for the start of training camp, I’m confident that having this surgery now will allow me to perform at my best and contribute throughout the season,” said Dudley.  “I appreciate the patience and support of the organization and I can assure my teammates and the fans that I will work extremely hard to be on the floor as soon as possible.”

Joel Embiid Re-Broke Navicular Bone In Right Foot

Jul 21, 2015 11:36 AM

Joel Embiid re-broke the same navicular bone in his right foot, according to sources.

On June 13th, the Philadelphia 76ers released a statement that Embiid's foot wasn't healing as much as had been anticipated. On July 11th, the 76ers released a statement that Embiid would undergo season-ending surgery.

Jahlil Okafor had known for a couple of weeks that Embiid would miss the entire season.

Between the season ending and the June 13 statement, a source said Embiid was working out daily at the team's practice facility. When asked if Embiid was playing five-on-five, the source said that he hadn't, but "only because there weren't enough people to play five-on-five. He was playing very meaningful games of three-on-three and was doing full-court workouts. He is pretty much a full go."

Chris Bosh Finds Renewed Passion, Expects To Be Ready For Training Camp

Jul 15, 2015 1:27 PM

Chris Bosh's health scare in which he missed the second half of the season with blood clots on his lung has triggered a renewed passion for the sport.

Bosh expects to be 100 percent ready by the start of training camp.

"That's renewed my passion," Bosh said at halftime of the Heat's 101-69 summer-league loss to the Boston Celtics at Cox Pavilion on the UNLV campus, where he watched as a spectator. "You don't miss anything until it's gone. It’s good for me to miss the game right now."

Bosh is still taking blood-thinning medication for at least a couple more weeks.

"It's a little bit tougher getting back on that court if you haven't played in a while," said Bosh, who has been conditioning the past month. "I'm kind of working through that. It's good to get it out now as opposed to later. I feel good. Shot feels good. The conditioning is coming along."

Bosh is excited to finally have a chance to play with Goran Dragic.

"It will take some time," Bosh said. "We're going to have to figure out our roles and everything. It's just going to be a constant conversation.

"Pick and roll is going to be huge. I love a guard that attacks. That's always good for me. With chemistry, that's something that we’re going to have to get on the same page."

Jul 12, 2015 12:58 AM

Joel Embiid will likely miss the 2015-16 season due to a second surgery after the latest setback in the healing of his right foot, according to several sources.

“I would say there’s a great possibility that Embiid won’t play next year,” the source said. “Just think how long they sat him when they thought he was healthy.”

The Philadelphia 76ers are planning as if Embiid won’t play this season, according to sources.

Another source said the franchise is concerned that this setback could be career-threatening.

76ers' Rookie Richaun Holmes Suffers Broken Elbow

Jul 10, 2015 10:36 AM

Philadelphia 76ers rookie Richaun Holmes has been diagnosed with a fractured elbow in Utah and faces a six-to-eight week recovery timetable, league sources told RealGM.

Out of Bowling Green, Holmes cemented himself as rising draft prospect at the Portsmouth Invitational and went 37th overall to the 76ers in the June NBA Draft.

Holmes posted 29 points, 15 rebounds, four blocks and three steals in 56 total minutes in three games before suffering the broken elbow in Thursday’s summer league game. The 6-foot-10 forward continued to play through the injury, checking back into the game after his fall.

Holmes, 21, hopes to be fully healthy by the 76ers’ training camp in the fall and could be in line for a contract as a second rounder.

A two-way big man, Holmes averaged 14.8 points and eight rebounds in his senior season in 2014-15.

“No change as of yet,” Sam Hinkie said Thursday. “A number of meetings are happening about that, even one today. But we have meeting almost every day about that. We don’t not have anything ready to announce.”

Embiid has been ruled out of the Summer League, but could still undergo surgery at some point.

“These are decisions you want to spend enough time on to make sure A: You get it right,” Hinkie said. “And B: you really talked through things and everything is on the same page.”

NBA Forms Committee To Promote Player Health Research

Jul 8, 2015 12:20 PM

The NBA has formed a committee to promote research into player health.

The initiative is in partnership with GE Healthcare. It will be spearheaded by a 20-person strategic advisory board that will be comprised of team physicians and clinical researchers from various fields, including orthopedics, sports medicine, radiology and epidemiology.

Though the board will not perform the actual research as a unit, the goal is to identify and design research projects that will help keep athletes on the floor through improved detection protocols and treatment programs.

In June, Adam Silver said the league was trying to decrease the number of back-to-backs and four-in-fives in the name of injury prevention.

"The injury data isn't showing that this was a worse year in terms of injuries than last year," he said. "Having said that, there are more high-profile players seemingly that are injured this year than last year. So that always concerns me. I think it's something that the league and the teams are spending enormous resources on for best of kind medical care, best of kind science to see what we can do to prolong players' careers and keep them on the floor longer."
