Loren Woods dropping to the 46th pick was a shocker, and a blessing for Minnesota. But what about Gonzaga's senior sensation, Casey Calvary? Calvary led Gonzaga to two runs through the NCAA tournament. He seemed a perfect fit for many teams, a 6-foot-10, athletic player who can run the floor, shoot the three and block shots. He is also a feisty competitor. Instead, he is fielding offers from Europe, some of them offering more than the NBA rookie minimum.
Well, not exactly. But the Boston Herald runs a Scripps Howard article on 6' 10" Shavlik Randolph. Randolph is ready to start his senior year at high school, and is one of the country's top-ranked players . After watching the high schoolers picked at the top of the draft, Randolph realizes declaring for the draft next spring is an option for him.
The Spurs' first-round pick, point guard Tony Parker, is contractually-bound to play next season in France, report Johnny Ludden of the San Antonio Express. However, his agent, Mark Fleischer, says he already had a verbal agreement on a buy-out if Parker was taken in the first round. He expects no problems in the negotiation next week. Parker believes the buyout will be under $500,000. However, Parker won't show up in San Antonio until later in the summer as he competes for France's under-20 national team.
Marc Stein of the Dallas Morning News writes that the Clippers once again headlined at the draft, this time, by trading out of it. In trading the #2 for Elton Brand, a proven 20-and-10 guy, the Clippers have got a sure-fire top-notch power forward for years to come -- if Sterling can pay when the time comes.
Most of us haven't heard of Kedrick Brown. But the Boston Herald reports that the Celtics had "equal parts covert action, prayer, subterfuge and blind luck" to get Brown. Add lots of mis-information to the mix. They also say Joe Johnson was the player of their dreams, once they realized Pau Gasol wouldn't be available. And while most people expected them to take a pg with the 21st pick, they couldn't resist picking sg Joe Forte when he was still available.
Different people see things different. We give you two analyses of the draft. Atlanta's Curtis Bunn looks at winners and losers. Winners include Boston, Grizzlies, Clippers, Atlanta, and Orlando. Foxsports' Randy Hill checks out the good, the bad and the ugly. The only two repeats among the good are Boston and the Clippers. Hill includes the Grizzlies and Magic in his 'ugly' category.
The best analysis about 'how the draft works now' is by RealGM's own Andy Stein. It's the second 'Related Piece' below.
