Isiah Reveals Some Draft Night War Room Secrets

Jun 29, 2005 5:55 PM

In a WFAN 660 AM Radio Interview at 5:30 PM EST Today, Isiah Thomas revealed some of his Draft Night plans that he was mulling. Thomas started off by ranking his Draft Board Big Men as: Bogut, Frye, and Bynum, adding an interesting note that he tried to acquire the 10th Pick (as well as a few others) on Draft Night.

Also, Thomas mentioned that he gave a very strong consideration to drafting Chris Taft at #30, but instead opted for David Lee because of the better work ethic. He really loved the four Draft Night additions of Richardson, Robinson, Frye, and Lee, feeling that they?re hard workers and will continue New York?s goal of getting younger, bigger, and more dynamic.

As for the coaching search, Thomas leaked that he has three to four other candidates (including Herb Williams) to consider be fore he makes his decision.

Raptors And Bobcats Hold The Keys To The 2005 NBA Draft

Jun 28, 2005 5:38 AM

The Bobcats are one team that have reportedly pulled back from trade talks where they?d move up and are looking to move down and that is because the value of the 13th spot has increased so significantly over the last week.

They think that there is so much value to be had in this area of the draft, and a source informed RealGM's Christopher Reina late on Monday that the Bobcats are discussing a deal with Toronto for the 7th and 16th picks.

Toronto?s guy is Danny Granger and they know Utah will not select him, regardless of who they?re drafting for, so the 16th pick is being considered as an insurance policy on getting him, similar to when the Raptors baited the Warriors into the Vince Carter-Antawn Jamison trade. If they don?t do the trade and Granger is drafted by the Bobcats at five, then they will be forced to select either Gerald Green or Martell Webster, both of whom interest the Hornets and could be used later this summer if they should strike a Jamaal Magloire deal.

These draft picks have just become too valuable for team?s with multiple selections to relinquish them so freely and that is because Andrew Bynum, Channing Frye and Hakim Warrick are now virtual locks to be drafted before the second turn of the night comes around for teams like the Bobcats and Raptors and these are three players they expected to be behind them. The result of this is of course a significant displacement of several players that they have considered at number five, most notably, Raymond Felton.

A league executive told Reina on Monday that the Bobcats are prepared to trade down from 13 if Raymond Felton is off the board.

Luther Head Looking Like A 1st Rounder, Possibly Detroit At 26

Jun 26, 2005 7:07 PM

Luther Head has become a surprise pick to crack the top-30. When I spoke with Ryan Blake a few days ago to discuss this year?s crop, Head was one player he singled out as a prospect that would be an absolute steal in the second round and would become an instant candidate for the Gilbert Arenas Award.

Joe Dumars will not let him get past his pick at 26. Head possesses all the same qualities that made the Pistons? GM one of the finest players of the 80?s and 90?s. Head worked out for the Pistons on Saturday, solidifying what a source had previously told me about the team's interest in the Illinois product.

Report Of Greg Oden's Commitment To OSU Premature

Jun 25, 2005 1:40 AM

Greg Oden's commitment to Ohio State hasn't occurred just yet, despite what the Indianapolis Star reported Friday morning in a story quoting an anonymous source.

Oden, a 7-footer who will be a senior Lawrence (Ind.) North, had been considered a possible No. 1 pick in the 2006 draft until an NBA rule change this week requiring players to be at least one year out of high school to be drafted.

Oden's AAU coach, Mike Conley Sr., told ESPN.com that Oden hasn't committed to anyone. Conley Sr. said Oden hasn't told any coach of his intentions just yet. A source close to Wake Forest confirmed that the Demon Deacons' staff was told that no decision was made.

Sources: Bynum Works Out For Blazers Again

Jun 24, 2005 6:57 PM

According to NBA sources that spoke with Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress, Andrew Bynum worked out for the Portland Trailblazers once again yesterday, his second workout with the organization in the past week.

Bynum had supposedly shut down his workouts and even cancelled a workout with the Nets on Wednesday. The workout was supposed to be top secret, but word quickly leaked out to us from two separate and independent sources.

With the NBA finals in the books and teams being free to make trades once again, the stage could be set for the Blazers to pull off a much anticipated trade with the Lakers that would send the #3 pick to Los Angeles. The Lakers would use the #3 to take either the logical pick, Chris Paul, or Mitch Kupchack?s favorite, Gerald Green. Portland would take either Andrew Bynum or Martell Webster, maybe pick up Caron Butler on the way, and dump a bad contract like Ruben Patterson in the process in return for Chucky Atkins? ending contract.

May Could Be Nets' Guy At 15

Jun 23, 2005 12:29 PM

North Carolina forward Sean May believes he would be a perfect fit for the New Jersey Nets, who pick 15th in Tuesday night's NBA Draft.

"They're pretty naked at the [power forward] spot," said May, who led the Tar Heels to the national championship in April. "When I look at their roster my eyes light up.

"I can fill that spot. I think it's kind of weird when your point guard is your leading rebounder with 7? rebounds a game and your [big guys] are getting only four or five a game. I think with my ability to rebound and my ability to defend and play that position, I think I can come in and fill that void and get significant minutes right away."

Blazers Will Not Rule Out Selecting Paul

Jun 23, 2005 11:51 AM

The Portland TrailBlazers already have a young point guard Sebastian Telfair but they will not rule out taking Wake Forest's Chris Paul with the third pick in Tuesday night's NBA Draft.

"He's very, very much on our radar screen," Blazers GM John Nash said after watching Paul work out at Loyola University in Chicago. "He is going to be a very high choice -- I would suspect in the top five or six in this draft. He is very impressive."

Still, if the Blazers select him, Paul thinks they will trade him.

"That would be a pretty weird situation," said Paul, who left Wake Forest University after his sophomore season. "I realize they took Sebastian (Telfair) last year, so that would definitely be a conflict of interest. If they draft me, I'm sure that something else is going to take place."

In the end, many expect Portland to deal their pick.

Magic Will Stay At #11; Narrows List To Five Players

Jun 23, 2005 1:29 AM

The Magic believe the cost to move up in the draft is too high so they plan to stick at #11, where they have likely narrowed their choice to five swing players.

Hakim Warrick (Syracuse) and Joey Graham (Oklahoma State) Charlie Villaneuva (Connecticut)  Antoine Wright (Texas A&M) and Martell Webster (Seattle high schooler).

There was surprisingly no mention of North Carolina power forward Sean May, who the Magic are rumored to be high on.

The Magic would love New Mexico forward Danny Granger or Arizona center Channing Frye to be on the board at #11 but that is getting more unlikely by the day.

"Magic Player Personnel Director Dave Twardzik said the Magic are "looking for a guy who can play, period," regardless of position, and believe they can find one at No. 11."
