Mayo Signs With Nike

Jun 26, 2008 2:39 PM

Maverick Carter, O.J. Mayo?s marketing agent, confirmed this morning that Mayo has signed a four-year deal with Nike.

Mayo is the first of the high-profile draft picks who will be drafted on Thursday, to have signed a deal. Carter would not comment on the financial terms of the deal.

?It?s a great deal,? said Carter, who also worked with Mayo?s new CAA agent Leon Rose on the shoe contract. ?This is the best company for him. There was discussions with other brands about giving him more money if he was drafted into a bigger market like New York or Los Angeles, but Nike showed they really wanted him because they didn?t care what market he was in.?

Paxson Preaches Patience If Rose Is Number One

Jun 26, 2008 5:47 AM

If Derrick Rose is chosen first overall today, as many believe, John Paxson is asking people to give the young point guard time to make an impact, the Chicago Triune is reporting.

"Every team would like to think when they have a bad year they can turn it around overnight," Paxson said. "But we have to look a few years down the road and figure out how we're going to be better."

"There are 20 teams that would love to have a really good point guard," Paxson added. "Ever since the league changed the rule out front and prohibited contact on the perimeter and you can't put a forearm on a guy and ride him, you see the success of Chris Paul and Deron Williams and the difference they made in winning and losing."

"But Deron didn't jump into this overnight. His first year, he didn't start most of the season. Utah had a little bit longer-range view on him. Whether it's us or Miami, I think the same thing applies for Derrick."

Eric Gordon To Go At 4 Or 5?

Jun 26, 2008 3:03 AM

Could Eric Gordon be off the draft board when the New York Knicks pick at position 6?

According to the New York Daily News, there is speculation that either Seattle, who is picking at 4, or Memphis, who is picking at 5, will select Gordon.

If the Knicks cannot trade up to take O.J. Mayo, it is believed that they will choose out of a group including Italian small forward Danilo Gallinari, Gordon, UCLA guard Russell Westbrook and Arizona guard Jerryd Bayless.

Some in the Knicks organization have Gallinari rated above Gordon.

Gordon Losing Sleep, Uninterested In Indiana?

Jun 25, 2008 9:33 PM

Eric Gordon admitted on Wednesday that he has had trouble sleeping lately and also didn't seem interested in playing for his hometown Pacers.

"It seems like the past couple of weeks that my sleep has been less and less," Gordon told RealGM on Wednesday. "I'm anxious to see what team I'm going to be taken by."

When asked what a 'combo-guard' like himself could bring to an NBA team, Gordon said "physical toughness and you know, scoring."

Gordon even revealed that new Indiana University coach Tom Crean told him to leave school early to join the professional ranks.

"Crean said I should go. He said I was ready for the next level from watching me play last year," he admitted.

Despite having played for the Hoosiers and North Central High School in Indianapolis, Gordon appears far from comfortable with falling to his hometown Pacers at No. 11.

"Well, I don't know," he said when asked about playing for the Pacers. "I just want to be picked as high as I possibly can. You just never know."

Augustin Still Can't Believe Where He Is

Jun 25, 2008 8:58 PM

Texas guard D.J. Augustin still can't believe how vastly his life will change on Thursday night when NBA commissioner David Stern calls his name.

"It hasn't hit me yet. I'm just having fun right now and I'm trying to enjoy it," Augustin told RealGM on Wednesday. "I'm excited and anxious to know where I'm going."

He admitted that he often speaks to former Longhorn teammate Kevin Durant.

"We talk almost everyday. His situation was pretty tough this year, being on a team that didn't win too much," he admitted. "He was down a lot about that because he's a competitor."

What has impressed many about Augustin is the importance he has placed on other aspects of his life, like family and academics.

"I just wanted to show people that basketball players aren't just all about sports," he said. "We can also do our work in school as well. I wanted to prove that to myself, everybody out there and my family."

Guards are a hot commodity in this year's NBA Draft, with Augustin slotted to go to anyone of the numerous teams in need of a pure point guard.

In fact, the Knicks told Augustin's agent that they he will "definitely be in consideration" when they use the sixth overall pick.

Playing in Mike D'Antoni's system is something that certainly interests the New Orleans native.

"That system is what I'm used to, it's what I'm familiar with," he added.
