Jennings Says Look Out For Jeremy Tyler

Jun 26, 2009 7:36 AM

Brandon Jennings warned reporters to watch out for Jeremy Tyler when the 2011 NBA Draft rolls around.

Tyler, a highly-touted high school junior, plans to skip his senior year to play in Europe.

"I think the kid is going to do a lot better than I did," Jennings told Sports Illustrated. "European basketball is more of a big man's game. Big men are always in the key, and there's a lot of zone [in Europe], so I think it will be good for him. He might surprise a lot of people. Everybody's like, He's leaving, he's not finishing his senior year, but overseas is more of a big man's game and they really like to play inside. My thing for him would be to stay strong mentally because it can be tough. You're a long way home, with a different language and different coaches. But if he stays there for two years, he'll be the top draft pick when he comes out."

Griffin, Thabeet, Harden Go In Top-3

Jun 26, 2009 12:10 AM

The 2009 NBA Draft has come and gone, with Blake Griffin, Hasheem Thabeet and James Harden comprising the top-3 selections, going to the Clippers, Grizzlies and Thunder respectively.

With the fourth pick, Sacramento passed on Ricky Rubio and instead went with Tyreke Evans.

Minnesota followed by taking consecutive point guards in Rubio and Jonny Flynn.

The Warriors came next and spoiled New York's plans by grabbing Stephen Curry, which led Donnie Walsh to pull the trigger on Jordan Hill.

Demar DeRozan went to Toronto, while Brandon Jennings was selected by Milwaukee to conclude the top-10.

The Nets, who traded Vince Carter to the Magic earlier in the day, selected Terrence Williams out of Louisville with the 11th pick.

Gerald Henderson, Tyler Hansbrough and Earl Clark went to the Bobcats, Pacers and Suns respectively at 12, 13 and 14 to conclude the lottery portion of the draft.

Detroit, Chicago and Philadelphia added Austin Daye, James Johnson and Jrue Holiday to the Eastern Conference.

Minnesota selected another point guard at 18 in Ty Lawson, but traded his draft rights to Denver.

After trading away Acie Law for Jamal Crawford, Atlanta selected Jeff Teague.  Utah and New Orleans took two more point guards off the board in Eric Maynor and Darren Collison.

Portland surprisingly picked Victor Claver with the 22nd pick, followed by Omri Casspi to Sacramento.

Dallas selected B.J. Mullens, but then traded him to the Thunder for Rodrigue Beaubois who was the 25th overall pick.

The Bulls then took Taj Gibson, followed by DeMarre Carroll to Memphis and Wayne Ellington to Minnesota.

The Lakers selected Toney Douglas on behalf of the Knicks with the 29th overall pick.

Cleveland ended the first round by drafting Christian Eyenga, who was the biggest surprise of the first round.

Jennings 'Enjoying' The Draft In Private

Jun 25, 2009 6:49 PM

The media was issued the following statement from agent Bill Duffy roughly 45 minutes prior to the start of the NBA Draft:

"Because we do not have a strong grasp of Brandon's draft position, I've advised that he and his family enjoy this day in a more private setting with the people he loves the most," Duffy said in the statement.

"Brandon Jennings will have a very illustrious career in the NBA, and at the end of the day, that is all that is important."

29 Picks Have Been Involved With Trades

Jun 24, 2009 9:48 PM

With Wednesday's trade between Portland and Dallas where the teams swapped first round selections, picks 22-28 have all been traded.

Sacramento acquired Houston's 23rd overall pick in the Ron Artest trade last year.

The Spurs traded the 25th overall pick to the Thunder (then Sonics) in 2008 as part of the Kurt Thomas deal.

Chicago acquired Denver's first round choice from Oklahoma City, the 26th overall, in exchange for Thabo Sefolosha.  The Thunder had acquired the pick from the Nuggets in the Chuck Atkins salary dump.

Memphis acquired the 27th overall pick from Orlando as part of the three-way Rafer Alston, Kyle Lowry trade involving the Rockets at the 2009 trade deadline.

The Wolves own Boston's first round pick, the 28th overall, as the final piece of the massive Kevin Garnett trade.

Picks 51-57 of the second round have all changed hands via trade as well.  In total, 29 picks have been traded away from their original owner.

Barring a miracle during the draft, more than half of the picks will have been dealt.

Curry Will Focus On Bulking Up

Jun 24, 2009 9:15 PM

Stephen Curry is a tremendous shooter, but critics have knocked his slight frame.

He's listed at 6'3", 185 pounds, but his wiry build makes him look even smaller.

"I've just got to continue to develop physically," Curry said when asked about his biggest weakness. "That will come with this being my life now. All I'm going to do is wake up, go to the gym and work out."

Flynn Was Buried On Bench In High School

Jun 24, 2009 8:53 PM

Jonny Flynn is expected to be a high pick in Thursday's NBA Draft, but was stuck on the bench just five years ago.

As a freshmen playing on the varsity team in Niagara Falls, N.Y., Flynn was the last man on the bench.

"I've persevered through a lot of things in my life," Flynn said when asked how it will feel to be drafted. "Getting up early in the morning, being the last guy on the bench in the ninth grade on the varsity team, and all the things that I went through."

How could Flynn, a member of the All-Big East Second Team, be a bench warmer in high school?

"They said I should have played JV, but coming out after seventh and eighth grade, where I really destroyed junior varsity, and me being a competitor, I always wanted to be on the highest level."

Just three years after being a bench warmer, Flynn averaged 15.7 points and 5.3 assists in his freshman campaign at Syracuse.

He improved those numbers to 17.4 points and 6.7 dimes this past year.

Holiday Isn't Afraid To Make Mistakes

Jun 24, 2009 8:31 PM

Jrue Holiday will likely be asked to do some significant ball-handling for a team next fall.

That might be considered a tall order for someone that just turned 19 a few weeks ago, but not Holiday.

"I'm going to make mistakes because I'm so young and because I'm new to this, but everybody fails at times," Holiday said Wednesday. "What matters is how you come back from it."

Holiday left UCLA after just one season, in which he averaged 8.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 35 games.

He added that no matter where he goes, he'll be looking to take over the job of starting point guard.

"Anywhere I go, I'm going to try to take that starting position," Holiday said. "I'll try to do that in practice or summer league or whenever I get the chance."

Jennings Now Sees Pick-And-Roll Better

Jun 24, 2009 7:43 PM

Brandon Jennings made a controversial decision to play in Europe rather than attend college, but he believes it has paid off.

"Out of high school I was a little wild. I just did whatever I wanted to do, but I think Europe has slowed my game down and I've read situations well off the pick-and-roll," Jennings said Wednesday. "I think I've gotten a lot better off the pick-and-roll and just overall being a true point guard."

After attending Oak Hill Academy in Virginia, Jennings signed on to play for Virtus Roma in Italy.

He averaged 5.5 points and 2.6 assists in 27 games in the Italy Serie A, and 7.6 points and 1.6 assists in 16 Euroleague games.
