Marshall Henderson Tested Positive For Cocaine Last January

Jan 31, 2013 12:33 PM

Marshall Henderson is averaging 19.3 points per game this season as a JC transfer on Ole Miss.

Henderson spent 25 days in jail last spring for violation of the terms of his probation stemming from a 2010 forgery charge related to counterfeit money. The reason for the probation violation wasn't publicly known until this week.

In January of last year, Marshall tested positive for cocaine, marijuana and alcohol, according to the records provided by the Tarrant County, Texas, District Attorney's office through a Freedom of Information request.

Ole Miss declined to make Henderson available Wednesday.

Henderson could be a late first round or second round pick.

Colangelo Was Torn Between Bargnani, Gay On Draft Night

Jan 30, 2013 1:11 PM

The Toronto Raptors continue to pursue a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies for Rudy Gay.

The Raptors held the first overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft and selected Andrea Bargnani, passing over Rudy Gay, amongst others.

"Bryan Colangelo has loved Gay since his college days," writes Chad Ford. "He was seriously torn between Gay and Bargnani on draft night. I think he feels like if he unites them, the Raptors instantly get better."

Muhammad: Worrying About Playing Defense Remains New

Jan 29, 2013 2:16 PM

Shabazz Muhammad is one of the best offensive players in the country, but his defense still needs work.

"In high school, I never worried about playing defense at all, to be honest," said Muhammad. "So it was all new to me. It's still not natural. I have to think about it all the time, about staying in my stance, all of the little things you have to do."

UCLA has improved as the season has progressed on the defensive end.

The Bruins currently ranked 23rd in scoring offense and 232nd in scoring defense.

McAdoo Still Growing Into Go-To Role For Tar Heels

Jan 26, 2013 7:21 PM

James McAdoo is still learning how to be North Carolina's go-to guy.

McAdoo went from playing behind three NBA first-round picks as a freshman to the top of the scouting report this season.

"The defense was never aimed at him — we still had Harrison Barnes, Tyler Zeller, John Henson and those guys," Tar Heels coach Roy Williams said. "It's a lot easier when the defense is not aimed to stop you. And now who do they talk about? They talk about James Michael and Reggie (Bullock). It's hard to handle that."

McAdoo has attempted at least 15 shots just five times all season.

"He wants to be one of the guys," McAdoo’s high school coach, Michael Allen, said. "He wants to show up and do his job and go home. That's just his personality. You're not going to change it. Part of you wishes he was just a little meaner ... but at the same time that's just his makeup. It is what it is. I don't consider it a weakness. That's just the way God made him."

UCLA Investigating Muhammad's Gucci Backpack

Jan 25, 2013 7:27 PM

UCLA's compliance department is investigating a Gucci backpack owned by Shabazz Muhammad.

The NCAA investigated Muhammad's eligibility before the start of the season.

Pat Forde reported that the bag retails for at least $990 and that Muhammad's sister purchased it for him as a gift.

"That's crazy but it's nothing," said Muhammad. "My parents got it for me."

Anthony Bennett Adjusting To Physicality Of Conference Play

Jan 24, 2013 11:31 AM

Anthony Bennett has averaged just 10 points and shot just two free throws over his last three games, all against Mountain West Conference opponents.

"It's a lot tougher," Bennett said of conference play. "They are just trying to stop me. They are going to do whatever it takes, if it's double-teaming or just being straight up physical with me. But I think I'm going to adjust to it soon, and hopefully it will get better."

UNLV coach Dave Rice said opponents have adjusted to Bennett’s skill set.

"Conference play is different in terms of how teams scout and in terms of how physical the games are. I think it's been a little bit of an adjustment for him," Rice said. "Anthony was fantastic in nonconference, and so teams are going to set their defense around him. He's the first person on their scouting report, so they're going to guard him hard and know where he is."

Bennett is still adapting to the physicality of college basketball on the offensive end.

"In high school, I never really had all that stuff," Bennett said. "We have a lot of weapons, but they feel like they need to double-team me to get the ball out of my hands, and it is what it is. I'm not going to try and force any shots or anything. I just want us to win."

McLemore Gaining Momentum As GM's Top Pick

Jan 23, 2013 2:00 PM

Ben McLemore has had a hugely impressive redshirt freshman season at Kansas.

McLemore has a True Shooting Percentage of .651 this season and a PER of 24.61.

McLemore is gaining momentum as the potential No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft.

"I spoke with five different GMs this week who told me they'd take him No. 1," wrote Chad Ford. "McLemore has been the best college player I've watched this season. I love him. A great combination of athleticism, length, shooting ability, ball handling and defense. He has the chance to be a very special player at a position that's been very weak over the last five years."

Patric Young Working To Improve Free Throw Shooting

Jan 19, 2013 11:12 PM

Patric Young is working to solve his free throw woes.

Young shot just 4-of-8 from the line last weekend against LSU.

“It’s huge because I’m leaving points on the board whenever you miss free throws,” Young said. “You go 4 for 8, that’s four points that help you with your draft stock or your average on the year. I mean, it doesn’t really matter but when it comes down to the line in a game-winning situation, you need to be able to step up with confidence.”

Young took about 500 free throws earlier this week in the practice, and it showed on Thursday against Texas A&M.

Young went 4 for 5 from the line against the Aggies to improve to 52.5 percent for the season.

Willie Cauley-Stein Aggravates Old Knee Injury, Undergoes Minor Surgical Procedure

Jan 18, 2013 8:16 PM

Willie Cauley-Stein aggravated an old injury to his left knee and underwent a minor procedure on Thursday.

John Calipari said the Wildcats training staff could have put a knee sleeve on Cauley-Stein’s knee and let him play.

“But as you know,” Calipari said, “that’s now how we operate here. If I err, I’m going to err on the side of the kid. Let’s just be safe.”

Calipari confirmed that the injury has bothered Cauley-Stein at times this season.

“We have been dealing with Willie (for awhile),” Calipari said. “Again, it was an injury – I hate to tell you – since junior high school. For the last couple of weeks (it has bothered him). So, it just happened to where, alright, let’s go, let’s see (what’s wrong).”
