76ers To Fight Proposed Changes To Draft Lottery System

Jul 30, 2014 10:16 AM

The Philadelphia 76ers will fight changes to the draft lottery system that the NBA is pushing to implement in time for next season.

Though there are several facets and the proposals haven't been finalized, essentially the goal of commissioner Adam Silver is to balance out the lottery odds so the worst team or teams wouldn't have the highest chances of landing the top pick, sources said.

The 76ers are in a multiseason rebuilding project that is depending on a high pick next season.

The 76ers, however, may have a struggle to gain support from Silver or fellow teams on holding off the changes.

Agent Of Josh Huestis Proposed Delaying Rookie Contract By Going To D-League

Jul 24, 2014 1:07 PM

The Oklahoma City Thunder drafted Josh Huestis with the No. 29 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft.

First round picks typically receive guaranteed contracts for two seasons, but the Thunder and Huestis agreed for him to spend his rookie season with their D-League affiliate. Huestis will receive approximately $25,000 instead of $750,000. Huestis can start his rookie scale contract later.

The Thunder are essentially stashing Huestis in the D-League.

Huestis' agent Mitchell Butler tells SB Nation that the player's camp proposed it during the pre-draft process.

"This was the perfect team and the perfect storm," he said. "This isn't for everyone."

The move has been criticized by a variety of sources, as it may violate an NBA bylaw that compensation cannot be discussed with draft picks until after the player has been selected.

Andrew Wiggins Expected To Soon Sign Rookie Deal With Cavs

Jul 21, 2014 1:12 AM

Andrew Wiggins and the Cleveland Cavaliers are expected to sign a contract in the coming week.

Sources say the delay in Wiggins signing his deal has nothing to do with the possibilty of being traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Kevin Love.

The Cavaliers, sources say, are merely exploring options for using their estimated $1.4 million in remaining cap space before signing Wiggins to a contract that will pay him in the neighborhood of $5.5 million as a rookie.

Once Wiggins signs, however, league rules stipulate that the Cavs must wait 30 days before trading him.

One option under consideration for the Cavs, sources say, is using their leftover salary-cap space to create long-term contracts for recent second-round picks Joe Harris and Dwight Powell. Signing Wiggins first would preclude such moves.

NBA Proposing New Lottery System To Balance Odds

Jul 16, 2014 3:43 PM

The NBA submitted an official proposal to reform the lottery system, dismissing the Wheel idea in favor a revised weighting system that shifts each team's odds of getting the top pick.

The proposal is essentially an attempt to squeeze the lottery odds at either extreme toward a more balanced system in which all 14 teams have a relatively similar chance at the no. 1 pick, per sources familiar with the proposal.

The new proposal will give at least the four worst teams the same odds of winning the no. 1 pick, approximately 11 percent for each club. The odds decline slowly from there.

The proposal also calls for the drawing of the first six picks via the Ping-Pong ball lottery, sources say.
