O.J. Mayo Cleared To Play

Jan 31, 2007 6:59 AM

USC signee O.J. Mayo won a temporary restraining order today, clearing the senior point guard to play for Huntington (W.Va.) High tonight against Lakewood Artesia in a battle of nationally ranked teams at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C.

Cabell County (W.Va.) Circuit Judge Dan O'Hanlon granted requests by Mayo and five other Huntington players who had been suspended in the wake of an altercation during a game Friday.

Mayo was en route to Durham this morning and was expected to play, said USC assistant coach Bob Cantu. The other suspended players had already accompanied the team on the trip.

Mayo Could Be Suspended Two Games

Jan 28, 2007 4:46 AM

USC signee O.J. Mayo faces a two-game suspension after being ejected from a game Friday night involving his Huntington (W.Va.) High team in which he received two technical fouls and reportedly initiated contact with an official.

Mayo received one technical foul for taunting after scoring on a breakaway dunk, then a second technical for a verbal confrontation with players from the opposing team.

Mayo reportedly followed an official to the scorer's table to dispute the call and made contact, after which the official dropped to the court.

Newspaper accounts of the contact varied, with the Huntington Herald-Dispatch reporting that Mayo bumped into the official from behind and the Charleston Gazette stating Mayo had merely "put his arm on the official's shoulder to get his attention."

Police then escorted Mayo into the locker room.

Oregon State Picks Up Center Dismissed By Kansas

Jan 9, 2007 5:20 AM

C.J. Giles, who was dismissed from Kansas' basketball team in November after a student said he dragged her from his apartment by her feet and hit her, has joined the Oregon State program, Beavers coach Jay John said Monday.

The 6-foot-11, 240-pound Giles will sit out this season under NCAA transfer rules and will have two years' eligibility remaining. He played two seasons at Kansas, starting 13 of 33 games in 2005-06 and averaging 6.2 points and 4.8 rebounds.

John said in a news release that Oregon State recruited Giles from Rainer Beach High School in Seattle, "so we feel like we know him very well. He understands that he has been given a second chance and I am confident he will make the most of it.''

Top 10 Prospect Walker Tears ACL

Jan 9, 2007 3:41 AM

Bill Walker went from being a high school senior to college in the first semester. He helped Kansas State pick up two potential key NCAA Tournament resume wins. And, he looked like he was on the verge of leading the Wildcats and coach Bob Huggins toward a top five finish in the Big 12.

But Walker's work is now done for the season, shelved for the next six to eight months with a ruptured ACL in his left knee, leaving the Wildcats to fend for themselves in the league and in a quest for a bid.

Kansas State sports information director Tom Gilbert confirmed Monday afternoon that an MRI showed Walker's rupture and surgery would be performed some time in the next two weeks. This is the second time Walker suffered an ACL injury, going through the surgery and rehab in his right knee in 2003.

Tar Heels Move To No. 1, WSU Ranked For First Time In 24-Years

Jan 8, 2007 3:06 PM

North Carolina is No. 1 in The Associated Press' college basketball poll for the first time in almost six years. The wait has been quite a bit longer for Washington State, which is ranked for the first time in almost 24 years.

The Tar Heels (14-1) moved into the top spot Monday after three weeks at No. 2 following UCLA's loss at Oregon last weekend.

It is North Carolina's first time at No. 1 since a two-week run in February 2001, and it's the first time the Tar Heels are there in the three-plus seasons, including the 2005 national championship, under coach Roy Williams.

Tar Heels No. 1 In Nation?

Jan 7, 2007 11:08 PM

With every three-point play and painful trip to the free-throw line, Tyler Hansbrough powered North Carolina past Florida State.

He may have muscled the Tar Heels to No. 1 in the nation, too.

Hansbrough scored 20 of his 25 points in the second half to lead the second-ranked Tar Heels to an 84-58 victory over Florida State on Sunday night for their 11th straight win, one marked by the relentlessly aggressive low-post play that led to Hansbrough's "Psycho T" nickname.

Caltech Ends 11-Year, 207-Game NCAA Losing Streak

Jan 7, 2007 1:10 PM

Those brainy Beavers of Caltech finally won an NCAA basketball game, ending an 11-year streak of futility.

Travis Haussler had 27 points and eight rebounds, and Matt Dellatorre added 24 points and eight rebounds Saturday night to lead the California Institute of Technology to an 81-52 victory over Bard College of New York.

The win halted a 207-game NCAA Division III losing streak, dating to 1996.

"We expected to win a game, but not like this," Caltech coach Roy Dow said of the surprisingly one-sided victory.

Virginia Tech Upsets Duke In OT

Jan 6, 2007 10:49 PM

Virginia Tech had its heart broken in this situation before, clinging to a lead in the final moments at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Last year, Duke's Sean Dockery crushed the Hokies' spirit with a 40-footer at the buzzer. As the seconds ticked away Saturday, it looked like it would be Greg Paulus' turn.

"For a second, I thought it was going to happen again," Virginia Tech forward Deron Washington said. "Then I thought, 'There's no way. We can't lose this game again.' We had to try to get this win somehow."

That's when Washington did something.

He blocked Paulus' 3-point shot as time expired in overtime, ensuring there would be no last-second heroics for No. 5 Duke and sealing the Hokies' 69-67 upset.

Oregon Hands UCLA Its First Loss

Jan 6, 2007 6:55 PM

In 1974, Ernie Kent played for an Oregon team that upset No. 1 UCLA.

Thirty-three years later, Kent sobbed when his Ducks again knocked off the top-ranked Bruins.

"This is a together basketball team," the Oregon coach said after the 16th-ranked Ducks handed UCLA its first loss of the season, 68-66 on Saturday. "Their spirit is unbelievable."
