Donovan Mitchell Says Team USA Experience 'Helped Me In Tremendous Ways'

Aug 31, 2019 4:32 PM

Donovan Mitchell spoke of the impact that training with Team USA has had on his game ahead of the FIBA World Cup.

"There's a lot of learning going on here. This last month has helped me in tremendous ways...I feel the need to really get after a guy defensively and showing that. I feel like I need to find ways to disrupt the other team and apply that pressure they might not be used to. I think being able to set that tone is something I'm priding myself on," said Mitchell.

Gregg Popovich focused on honing Mitchell's leadership qualities during training camp.

"He has a propensity for leadership and that's how I spent my time with him. I'm not going to teach him how to shoot better or jump better or dribble better. But he has the intelligence and the willingness to become a leader and I think that'd be great. Not just for our team but for his team," said Popovich.

Kemba Walker echoed Popovich's sentiment.

"You wouldn't think he's the age he is, he's ahead of his years. He a natural-born leader. His skill set is unbelievable," added Walker.

Five-On-Five Basketball Could Be Eliminated From 2028 Olympics

Aug 30, 2019 10:47 AM

The 2020 Olympics will feature three-on-three basketball for the first time. There are some who believe five-on-five basketball could be phased out by the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

FIBA has attempted to grow the popularity of the Basketball World Cup, but the Olympics remains the most relevant international competition.

‘There are rumors, from people who hold high positions in European and world basketball, that the 2028 Olympics will not see (five-on-five) basketball anymore, and will be replaced by three-on-three,″ said Rolandas Skaisgirys of the Lithuanian 3×3 Association on the BasketNews. It podcast.

Andrew Bogut Following Win Over Team USA: 'We Can Beat Anyone In The World'

Aug 24, 2019 4:14 PM

Andrew Bogut spoke of the confidence that Australia's 98-94 win over Team USA gave his side ahead of the FIBA World Cup.

"We feel like we can beat anyone in the world ... this [is] the first time I've felt that with the Boomers. In the past, we'd be going to an Olympics or Worlds and not so much making up the numbers but [thinking], 'We'll give it a fair shot and what happens, happens.' We were competitive in the past but it wasn't like we were [thinking], 'We're trying to win a gold medal and beat anyone we come across' and I think this group genuinely has that belief. And I think a lot of that comes from having guys in this squad who are playing with those Team USA guys on a nightly basis [in the NBA] and not just warming the bench, but playing against them," said Bogut.

It was Australia's first win ever against Team USA, as well as Team USA's first loss since 2006.

Patty Mills discussed the potential impact of the win on the future of Australian basketball.

"Having 52,000 people here tonight, with kids everywhere who have supported the NBA for so many years to come and see this and then see the Dellys, Pattys, Joeys of the world, taking it to the United States .... hopefully gives them [inspiration] that anything is achievable. Hopefully we have 50 NBA players in 10-15 years. The support has always been there, but [this result] is huge on many levels ... this is just an exhibition game, but to see so many people come out in full force, it shows the support is there and we can hopefully feed off this for years to come.

Gregg Popovich Following Team USA Loss: 'Nobody Wins Forever'

Aug 24, 2019 3:01 PM

Gregg Popovich said that Team USA's 98-94 loss to Australia in an exhibition game was a wake-up call for his side leading up to the FIBA World Cup.

“The loss means that we need to play better. It’s a measure of who you are. Nobody wins forever...We looked discombobulated at times, made some poor decisions. Some of it is expected with a new group that’s trying to learn about each other and learn a system. So, it’s not surprising, but the Aussies gave us a great lesson as far as where we have to be and how we have to play in this kind of competition," said Popovich following the loss.

The loss represented the first time Australia had ever beaten Team USA in 26 previous games.

It was also Team USA's first loss since 2006.

Kemba Walker echoed Popovich's statement that Team USA needs to continue to improve before the main competition.

“They say Team USA doesn’t lose, I get it, they haven’t lost in a very long time, which I understand, but it happens. Teams lose. We are just going to take this loss and build from it, that’s all we can do is continue to try our best to get better. The real thing doesn’t start until China, so we’ve got one more game...That’s all we are worried about, just continuing to get better, continuing to learn each other," added Walker.
