Triano Wants Four-Year Commitment To Canadian National Team

Aug 28, 2012 12:58 AM

Jay Triano wants players to commit four years to the Canadian national team, saying the long-term pledge is essential to the program’s chances of qualifying for the 2016 Olympics.

“I think gone are the days when you can throw 12 players out there and expect to compete, and I think my time with the United States team showed that,” said Triano, who spent five summers as an assistant with USA Basketball. “Jerry Colangelo asked those players for a three-year commitment. When they did that and the players became committed, that’s when they became successful and won back-to-back gold medals.”

On Monday, Canada Basketball closed a five-day training camp which featured many of country's top players, including Tyler Ennis and Tristan Thompson.

“If we’re going to be successful guys are going to commit,” Triano said. “The fact that they’re here working as hard as they are right now speaks volumes to their commitment. We’re going to have to decide as a staff which players we want to move forward and be part of our commitment to the program.”

Collins Downplays Talk Of Coaching Team USA

Aug 26, 2012 11:03 AM

Doug Collins is generating plenty of talk about possibly becoming the next U.S Olympic basketball coach, but the Sixers coach said Sunday that's all there is to it right now.

"It's a tremendous honor that somebody would even throw my name out there," Collins said. "It's four years down the road and I understand in this business you hope you are an active coach at the time.”

Collins hopes to stay with the Sixers long-term.

"I am hoping that I am still active and I would like to coach four or five years in Philadelphia,” Collins continued. "I feel good about our team and I love my staff, what we are doing and where we are headed. The ownership, Josh [Harris], has been so good to me, so I feel really good about that."

Eric Musselman Hopes To Return As Coach Of Venezuelan National Team

Aug 25, 2012 1:08 AM

Eric Musselman hopes to return for a third stint as head coach of the Venezuelan national team.

"I would like to continue with the national team," said Musselman. "I feel a special tie with the players and the Venezuelan federation.”

Musselman plans to speak again with Venezuelan Basketball Federation president Carmelo Cortez to discuss his contract, which expired after the World Olympic Qualifying Tournament in July.

Venezuela failed to advance to the knockout stage of the tournament, registering a loss to Lithuania in the preliminary round.

"(Cortez) received me and my wife in the new offices of the Federation just days after our game against Lithuania," Musselman said. "We had a productive meeting. I'm sure we'll talk soon."

Durant Learned To Focus On 'Little Things' As Member Of Team USA

Aug 22, 2012 11:18 PM

In a recent interview, Kevin Durant described how playing with Team USA taught him to focus on the little things that help win games.

“Just the focus and the energy that you have to have every single day,” Durant said when asked what he learned from his Olympic experience. “The details you have to pay attention to every day. That’s why we won the Gold. For every winning team, it’s the small things that win, not how many points LeBron (James) scores or Kobe (Bryant) scores or me.

“It’s about the deflections we get, the steals, the blocked shots, the charges we take. Small things like that that we do is going to separate us because everybody at this level is good at the major things in the game. That’s what I learned and hopefully we do it in (Oklahoma City) every game.”

Durant led the U.S. in scoring (19.5 ppg) and ranked second in rebounding (5.8 rpg) while averaging 26.0 minutes per contest.

Boeheim Expects Pro Coach To Succeed Krzyzewski

Aug 20, 2012 9:45 PM

Jim Boeheim expects Jerry Colangelo to opt for an NBA guy to succeed Mike Krzyzewski as coach of the U.S. national team.

“I think it could very likely be a pro coach,” Boeheim said. “Doc Rivers is a great coach, Gregg Popovich … they’re great coaches. There are more than enough great coaches in the NBA that could take over. It’s possible that it could be a college coach, but I think it’s more likely to be a pro coach.

“Whoever it is will have a tough assignment,” Boeheim continued. “They’ve got to go to Spain in two years for the World Championship, so that won’t be easy. But I’m sure we’ll still have players that want to play … and we’ll have a good coach and a good staff and it’ll be fun to watch someone else [guide the national team].”

Boeheim recently announced his decision to step down as a Team USA assistant.
