Perry Jones III Scores 27 In Sophomore Debut

Nov 30, 2011 12:12 AM

Perry Jones III scored 27 points on 14 shots from the floor in his sophomore debut. Jones had been suspended for the first five games of the 11-12 season.

Freshman Quincy Miller didn't play in the game due to a rolled ankle. Miller had been Baylor's leading scorer at 15.2 points per game.

Jones tied a career high in scoring, which was initially set last February against Texas A&M.

Dedmon Out 4-6 Weeks With Stress Injury In Right Foot

Nov 29, 2011 6:38 PM

Dewayne Dedmon has a stress injury in his right foot and is expected to miss four to six weeks.

Dedmon is a sophomore transfer on USC and a candidate for the NBA Draft.

At first, the injury, which was revealed by an MRI on Monday, was deemed a stress fracture.

But team athletic trainer David Borchardt amended that to note that it is a "stress injury" and that Dedmon will be immobilized for one week.

Dedmon suffered a fractured right hand during the preseason.

"I just look at it like, I'll be back," Dedmon said Tuesday. "It's not like it's at the end of the season where I can't finish out the season, but I can hopefully be back before conference."

"It affects us greatly," Kevin O'Neill said. "You can't replace 7-foot, 250 pounds, especially in the situation when we have so many inexperienced guys."

Nov 29, 2011 5:52 PM

Bradley Beal had 22 points and 10 rebounds in Florida's 96-70 win over Stetson.

"Coach (Billy) Donovan has always been on me about rebounding and I did whatever it took to push the ball on the offensive end, just trying to rebound as much as I could," Beal said.

Austin Rivers Using Negativity As Motivation

Nov 29, 2011 4:46 PM

Austin Rivers has become a polarizing figure already in his short college career.

An article last week from ESPN's Sebastian Pruti pointed out flaws in Rivers' game.

"I never ever worry about it," Rivers said. "Those people's jobs are to critique. The coaches and my teammates are happy with the way I'm playing. It's sports and there's nothing I can do about it. I'm not going to call ESPN and be like, 'Hey, can you stop that.' "

Rivers said he uses the negativity as motivation.

"I see it as motivation and they will be wrong by the end of the year," Rivers said of his critics

Calhoun: Drummond Does Things That Are Special

Nov 28, 2011 2:15 AM

Jim Calhoun singled out Andre Drummond for his role in Connecticut's 78-76 win on Saturday over Florida State.

"I thought Andre Drummond established the game early for us, which really, really helped us. I heard some foolish things about what he was and wasn't after a game or two. He does things that are special. The reason I say that, he got tired down the stretch. When we went up seven, eight, nine points, they started avoiding the middle a little bit, all set up by those early blocks by Andre. Those two freshmen [Ryan Boatright and Drummond] really gave us a spark."

Drummond had modest numbers in his first two games, but has increased his productivity and consistency in the most recent five games.

Committee May Form To Review Age Minimum For Draft

Nov 27, 2011 2:32 AM

The NBA and Players Association are considering the formation of a committee to review the age minimum for the draft with the possibility of leaving the current rule stand.

“Only the agreement to have the committee may be part of the new CBA,” the source said. “I doubt it will have any affect on the 2012 draft.”

The proposed committee would look at a system that would permit high school players to declare for the draft, and if players aren’t selected, they can retain eligibility and still play college basketball. Those players would have to wait two years to re-enter the draft as all other players would have to under the new rule.

But many executives are satisfied with the current rule.
