Self Identifies McLemore As Best NBA Prospect On Kansas Roster

Jul 30, 2012 10:43 AM

Bill Self has identified Ben McLemore as the top NBA prospect on the Kansas roster for the 12-13 season.

But Elijah Johnson will be the player most likely to be called upon when the Jayhawks need a bucket.

McLemore sat out last season due to being academically ineligible.

Michigan Wary Of Recruiting 'One-And-Done' Type Players

Jul 18, 2012 11:39 PM

John Beilein discussed the pros and cons of recruiting elite level players.

“You’ve got to recruit the best players that you can get,” Beilein said during a Wednesday interview. “If a guy is a Kobe Bryant (type), and he says, 'I’ve dreamed my whole life of going to Michigan, but I’m only going to be there one year,' that is a different thing for us than we’re in the top-10 list of this guy who’s a sure one-and-done.

“You can lose really good players slotted right behind him chasing that one. So we try to choose our battles very carefully, as to who we’re going to recruit that are really super prospects.”

Beilein acknowledged that some early departures are inevitable.

“We’ve had a two-and-done (Morris) and almost a one-and-done, as far as at least Trey considering it, with guys who barely made the top 100 (recruits), so it’s hard to tell who the one-and-done is and who isn’t,” Beilein said

Jabari Parker Puts Emphasis On Offensive System, Wants To Play Both Forward Positions

Jul 16, 2012 3:06 PM

Jabari Parker talked about what he’s looking for in prospective colleges.

“I want to see what offense and system fits me the best,” Parker said. “I know that’s going to dictate how my stock is during the draft because everybody dreams about going to the NBA. And the relationship with the coach -- someone who treats me just like everyone else. But you still have that time where you can still talk to him and have a good relationship that can be built on.”

Parker, who stands at 6-foot-8 and 225 pounds, would like to play both forward positions at the collegiate level.

“I would like to play small forward and power forward too,” he said. “Power forward because I can get to face up a lot of guys that are bigger and take em’ on the perimeter too.”

Andrew Wiggins May Reclassify To Class Of 2013

Jul 10, 2012 10:31 AM

Andrew Wiggins might end up reclassifying to become part of the 2013 class.

“If we could get him to college early which would then get him to the NBA earlier, as a coach and a mentor to him, then we have to tell him, ‘Hey, this is probably the direction for your development that you will probably want to go,’” Wiggins’ high school coach, Rob Fulford said.

“But also if he’s not ready we’re not going to push him because he’s still young. He wants to experience high school. It’s not like coming back here for a year is not going to help him. He’s gotten bigger, stronger. He’s gotta develop.”

Wiggins, widely considered the best player in the class of 2014, left the door open on the possibility of an early graduation.

“I think we’ll all sit down and talk at one of these AAU events and try to get it out of the way,” Fulford said, “and it’s either going to be the no for good, or yes let’s do it kind of plan.”

Cody Zeller Attacking Offseason Training Regimen, Improving NBA Measurables

Jul 3, 2012 11:30 PM

Cody Zeller has attacked his offseason training regimen, upping his weight to 240 pounds and his vertical leap to 39 inches.

“Cody is back here getting better every day,” Indiana coach Tom Crean said. “I keep telling him, ‘You’re getting better this June and July so you can play in future Junes.’”

Zeller recently managed 20 reps of 185 pounds on the bench press – four more reps than his older brother, Tyler, posted at the NBA scouting combine.

“What we’ve been able to do is structure his workouts and challenge him,” Crean said. “It’s important to challenge him and show him new things because once he gets it, he can get better so fast.

“He’s getting more comfortable shooting the ball from the perimeter. He always shot threes in our drills, but he was never comfortable doing it in games. One of the biggest things is to put him in a situation that no matter where you think teams are going to double him from, there’s an answer for it. And not just schematic answers, but answers he comes up with himself.”

Aaron Craft Recovering From Ankle Surgery

Jul 3, 2012 10:31 AM

Aaron Craft underwent surgery two weeks ago to remove a bone chip in his left ankle that has been bothering him since high school.

"If he turned the ankle wrong just a certain way, that small piece of bone would get jammed back on his tibia and it would cause excruciating pain," said Aaron’s father, John Craft.

Ohio State coach Thad Matta called the elder Craft and asked if he could persuade Aaron to have surgery just so he would take two weeks off from working on his game.

"He hasn't stopped since we've been back from (the Final Four in) New Orleans," Matta told the father.

Perry Jones Sustained Knee Injury Prior To Arriving At Baylor

Jul 1, 2012 1:23 PM

Perry Jones III was medically red-flagged by NBA team doctors over concerns about a meniscus issue in his knee.

Sam Presti indicated the knee is a nonissue.

“It was basically just a previous injury that he had prior to getting to Baylor,” Presti said. “He's played two years and been incredibly consistent with it. It's just something that we have to watch as we go forward. Like we talked about, if there's anything that comes up from it we'll be proactive. But going into the situation, we're thrilled and we're looking forward to having him compete this summer.”

Added Jones:  “My knee's fine. It didn't affect me at Baylor. My knee is doing great.”
