John Collins Used Summer League To Prove He Should Have Been Picked Higher

Jul 17, 2017 1:44 PM

John Collins fell to the Atlanta Hawks at No. 19 in the 2017 NBA Draft and he had an excellent Summer League.

Collins ranks second in Summer League in PER at 32.5.

“I wanted to prove that I should have went higher,” Collins said. “Not to say that I’m not happy with the spot I’ve fallen. I’ve fallen to great spot, a great organization, the fans love me. I have a great opportunity here, which I’m blessed for. But I want to show everybody, I feel like I should have gone number one. Maybe that isn’t realistic. But I want to prove to everybody that I should have went higher. I’ve been overlooked most of my career. So I’m kind of happy, because it gives me that same energy, that same fear and drive.”

Collins was a first-team All-ACC selection in 2017 as well as the conference's Most Improved Player.

LaVar Ball Told Magic Johnson Pre-Draft 'It's Marketing'

Jul 7, 2017 1:49 PM

During a critical pre-draft meeting with the Los Angeles Lakers, LaVar Ball spoke honestly to Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka about his intentions in marketing his sons and his Big Baller Brand with an over the top personality.

The meeting went a long ways in the Lakers' decision to draft Lonzo Ball.

"He just said it's marketing," Magic Johnson said. "That's what he had to do to market not only his son but the brand. Before I met him I had already thought that. I already knew what he was doing."

As Johnson recalls, "He said, 'Earvin, look, I'm not following my son. I'm not going to be hanging out in L.A. I'm going to be training these young kids [his other sons].'"

"'As far as training my boy, this is as far as I can take him,'" LaVar says he told Johnson. "'I'll leave it up to you to take him further. You can get him better with the film time and the coaching. You can take him to another level.'"

"I trust you with my boy. I just got a great feeling that you guys are going to take Zo to a whole other level.'"

Bulls Focused On Maximizing 2018 Lottery Odds

Jul 1, 2017 1:48 PM

With the Chicago Bulls trading away Jimmy Butler, a source says the team is focused on getting a top-4 pick in next year's draft.

The Bulls are high on Michael Porter Jr. while Luka Doncic, DeAndre Ayton and Mohamed Bamba are also expected to be high level prospects in the 2018 draft class.

“We’re not going to be throwing huge money at people right out of the gate,’’ John Paxson recently said of free agency.

The Bulls want to keep their young core intact while maximizing their lottery odds.
