Tellem Becomes First Agent To Call For Dismissal Of Billy Hunter

Jan 29, 2013 10:17 AM

In a letter sent to his players, Arn Tellem calls for the removal of Billy Hunter as executive director of the National Basketball Players Association.

“N.B.A. players deserve better representation from the union they fund,” Tellem writes in the letter. “I implore you and your fellow players to take control of your union and your future. It’s time for Mr. Hunter to go.”

Tellem suggests that the players make that decision during the players association's annual All-Star meeting.

In his letter, Tellem suggests that Hunter should not be allowed to attend that meeting to prevent him from any attempt “to intimidate and manipulate.” Tellem writes: “Hunter is betting that the players — historically passive — will let him slide. I hope you don’t. Clearly, Hunter has violated your trust.”

Hunter could not immediately be reached for comment.

Tellem represents Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, Pau Gasol, Joe Johnson, amongst many other NBA players.

No other agents have publicly called for Hunter’s dismissal, but Jeff Schwartz, Dan Fegan, Bill Duffy, Mark Bartelstein and Leon Rose all called for the union to decertify during the lockout.

An outside audit has heavily criticized the expenditures, hiring practices and judgment of Hunter during his tenure.

Ellison To Meet With Johnson On Potential Counteroffer For Kings

Jan 25, 2013 3:25 PM

Larry Ellison's quest to purchase an NBA team may continue with the Sacramento Kings.

Ellison is expected to meet soon with Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, according to minority owner Bob Cook.

Ellison is worth $41 billion and attempted to purchase the Golden State Warriors in 2010.

Ellison apparently would be operating independently of the potential partnership between billionaire Ron Burkle and Bay Area investor Mark Mastrov.

The possible emergence of Ellison could further complicate the Maloofs' efforts to complete their deal with the Seattle group, led by hedge fund manager Chris Hansen and Microsoft billionaire Steve Ballmer.

Ellison's presence could present a competitive counteroffer, which would also coincide with a legal challenge.

Average NBA Team Valuation Increases By 30 Percent

Jan 23, 2013 12:34 PM

The average NBA team is worth approximately $509 million, representing a 30 percent increase over last year.

The increase is due to higher revenue from television, new and renovated arenas, and the NBA’s new collective-bargaining agreement, which reduced player costs from 57% of revenues to roughly 50%.

The New York Knicks are the NBA's most valuable franchise, worth approximately $1.1 billion. The Knicks' value rose 41 percent due to a $980 million renovation of Madison Square Garden.

The Los Angeles Lakers were the NBA's most valuable franchise last season.

The Chicago Bulls rank third at $800 million, followed by the Boston Celtics, Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat, Houston Rockets, Golden State Warriors, Brooklyn Nets and San Antonio Spurs.

Kings, NBA Confirm Sale To Seattle Group

Jan 21, 2013 12:35 PM

The Sacramento Kings and the NBA have confirmed the sale of the franchise to a group from Seattle.

The deal has been submitted to the NBA for review and approval in the coming weeks.

"The Maloof family announced today that an executed purchase and sale agreement has been reached to sell the family's interest in the National Basketball Association (NBA) Sacramento Kings to a group led by investor Chris Hansen. The transaction requires approval by the NBA's Board of Governors and therefore no comments or details regarding the agreement will be released.

"We have always appreciated and treasured our ownership of the Kings and have had a great admiration for the fans and our team members. We would also like to thank Chris Hansen for his professionalism during our negotiation. Chris will be a great steward for the franchise."

The league confirmed it has received sale documents.

"The NBA received an executed Purchase and Sale Agreement for the transfer of a controlling interest in the Sacramento Kings from the Maloof family to an investor group led by Christopher Hansen. The proposed transaction is subject to the approval of the NBA Board of Governors and has been referred to the Board's committee process for review."

Jan 21, 2013 1:18 AM

The Maloof family has agreed on a deal to sell a 65 percent controlling interest of the Sacramento Kings to a Seattle-based group for $525 million, according to league sources.

NBA teams were notified of the deal on Sunday night.

Players Never Approved Hunter's $15M Contract

Jan 17, 2013 2:45 PM

Billy Hunter's five-year, $15 million contract extension in 2010 as executive director was never approved by player representatives.

The possible violation of the NBPA's constitution raises questions about the legitimacy of Hunter's contract and his future as executive director.

The contract of union general counsel Gary Hall was never approved either.

As part of an ongoing probe, the law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton and Garrison has investigated the the business practices of the union under Hunter's leadership.

"NBPA should consider whether Hunter should remain as Executive Director," according to the report. "Hunter was aware that his current contract was never properly approved and...he knowingly failed to disclose this information."

Rockets Don't Expect Resolution With Royce White Until Offseason

Jan 7, 2013 12:34 PM

Royce White wants the NBA, the National Basketball Players Association, the Rockets and himself to sign a document detailing his wishes for the mental health protocol. White has informed the Rockets that he won't report to the team until all parties sign the document.

The signing of such a document is banned under the current terms of the NBA collective bargaining agreement.

According to the uniform player contract detailed in the CBA, "no amendments to the form of the Uniform Player Contract provided for by Section 1 of this Article shall be permitted," and if a team or player agree on such an amendment, "such Contract or subsequent amendment, as the case may be, shall be disapproved by the Commissioner, and consequently, rendered null and void."

Despite a frustrating and sometimes contentious few months, the Rockets continue to want White part of their program.

The Rockets suspended White on Sunday and are expecting a resolution to be unlikely until the offseason.
