Mark Cuban was asked about how the NBA's escalating salary cap will change the way rosters are built.

“It’s going to change a lot," said Cuban. "More from a strategy perspective, it makes the value of draft choices go through the roof because they’re pegged at a certain price. Minimum contracts will go through the roof. Anybody that signs for the mid-level, the value goes through the roof.

“It’s going to be a lot of tough decisions. And in reality, if everything sticks to the projections that we come up with, the cap will go down after that. So that changes what you do as well.

“It will be really interesting. There will be some guys that will get way paid. When guys are making $30 million-plus, it’s going to be tough to have more than one of them.”

Glen Taylor is in serious talks to sell an approximate 20 percent stake in the Minnesota Timberwolves to a group led by Steve Kaplan.

Kaplan's group hopes purchasing a minority share will help position themselves to purchase the majority stake in the Wolves once Taylor decides to sell.

Kaplan is partnering with ex-Memphis Grizzlies CEO Jason Levien and Indonesian billionaires Handy Soetedjo and Erick Thohir.

Kaplan has an ownership stake in the Grizzlies and tried to purchase the Atlanta Hawks.

There has been a 50 percent drop in black head coaches in the NBA from three years ago, the lowest total in 16 years.

"That's not enough," said Paul Silas, who is now retired after three decades in the NBA coaching ranks. "There are more guys that understand how to coach basketball. And they should have a chance."

From 2001-2014, the NBA averaged 11 black head coaches per season. On opening night in 2012, half of the NBA's 30 head coaches were people of color, including an all-time 14 black coaches.

The number has been declining ever since.

"I think it bears watching, to see what happens," said Alvin Gentry. "Five years from now, where are we going to be, from a numbers standpoint?"

Mark Tatum, the NBA's deputy commissioner, dismissed the downturn as "cyclical."

Over the last 10 years, white head coaches have lasted 3.2 seasons, on average, while black coaches have lasted just 2.85 seasons, according to a study of coaching tenures by Bleacher Report.

Turnover has been especially heavy in the last two-and-a-half years, with 29 coaches hired since the end of the 2012-13 season. Just 11 of those hires were black.

Following on the precedent set last season by Kawhi Leonard and the San Antonio Spurs, both the Detroit Pistons and Andre Drummond and the Washington Wizards with Bradley Beal have delayed extensions to presumably preserve cap space.

"It's against the rules," said an unnamed executive who described it as a cap circumvention.

Both the player and team assume some risk in delaying an extension. The player can suffer a catastrophic injury and lose his market value, while the team can be stuck with the player signing an offer sheet with another team.

The motive for delaying an extension is that the player's cap hold is significantly lower than the first year of their new deal would be.
