Mohamed Bamba Would Have Preferred Going Straight To NBA

Apr 27, 2018 10:12 AM

Mohamed Bamba says he would have preferred the opportunity to go directly from high school to the NBA Draft.

Bamba spent one season at Texas before declaring for the draft.

Bamba said that it would have "taken my game to the next level."

"But at the same time, I could have had a year of NBA development and had a year head start," Bamba said. "So, obviously, I would love to have that opportunity if it was there for me."

Bamba averaged 12.9 points and 10.5 rebounds while ranking second in the country at 3.7 blocks per game.

"I don't want to take away from anything from my time at Texas," he told ESPN host Rachel Nichols and analysts Byron Scott and Tracy McGrady. "I think it was actually pretty darn special. The relationships that I've built there, and the people that I've come across, I met some of my best friends in life at the University of Texas."

NBA, NBPA Could End One-And-Done Rule For 2020 Draft

Apr 25, 2018 9:19 AM

The earliest the NBA will be able to change the one-and-done rule is for the 2020 NBA Draft.

The NBA and NBPA have held conversations centered on the elimination of the rule, which took effect for the 2006 NBA Draft.

Support has grown in recent years amongst many circles for the rule to be eliminated.

The growth of the G League over the past 10-plus years will help the NBA absorb more players.

NBA Leaves 18-19 Cap Projection At $101M, 19-20 At $108M

Apr 16, 2018 6:30 PM

The NBA has not changed their preseason salary cap projection of $101 million for the 18-19 season and $108 million for 19-20 in a new memo to teams.

The NBA typically has a variance in their projections from the preseason, but they appear to have zeroed in on an accurate number in September.

The luxury tax for 18-19 will be $123 million and $131 million 19-20.

National TV Ratings For NBA Up Eight Percent

Apr 16, 2018 1:51 PM

The NBA had their highest rated regular season in four years.

Coverage was up an average of eight percent for the 17-18 season across the four networks with broadcast rights for the NBA with an average audience of 1.3 million viewers.

ABC benefitted the most with a 17 percent increase compared to 13 percent for TNT, four percent for ESPN and one percent for NBA TV.

"The idea that there is a super-team out there in the Golden State Warriors and a half-dozen franchises trying to dethrone them, creates a narrative that makes people want to watch," Marc Ganis, president of the marketing firm Sportscorp, told The Hollywood Reporter earlier in the NBA season.

The median age for NBA viewers on TNT, ESPN, ABC and NBA TV is 42, years younger than the NFL (50) and MLB (57).

NBA Votes To Extend Current Revenue Sharing Plan

Apr 13, 2018 4:11 PM

The NBA's Board of Governors have voted to extend the league's current revenue sharing plan.

There will be some adjustments, however, to the existing structure to ensure incentives for both contributors and recipients.

For the 16-17 season, ten teams transferred a combined $201 million to 15 other teams.

"The need for revenue sharing was supposed to be for special circumstances," one large-market owner told ESPN.com last September, "not permanent subsidies."

Grizzlies Valued At Nearly $1.4 Billion With Buy-Sell Clause

Apr 10, 2018 10:45 AM

The Memphis Grizzlies are valued between $1.3 billion and $1.4 billion under the terms of a buy-sell clause. Robert Pera will retain control of the franchise.

The clause gave Steve Kaplan and Daniel Straus the option of buying the team out from Pera by naming a price for his shares.

Once triggered, the three groups negotiated for 60 days to try and strike a deal before Kaplan and Straus submitted binding bids.

Straus' bid was higher than Kaplan and Pera will match the bid and buy him out. It is unclear what will happen with Kaplan and his shares.

Robert Pera To Retain Controlling Interest Of Grizzlies

Apr 9, 2018 9:34 PM

Robert Pera will retain his interest in the Memphis Grizzlies as part of a buy-sell process.

Pera will continue to operate the team with controlling interest after making a "buy-sell" agreement with minority partners.

Steve Kaplan and Daniel Straus each exercised their "buy-sell" clause in which they could either buy out Pera of his interest, or be bought out themselves with the price set by them.

In his letter to season ticket holders, Pera said he is "committed to Memphis as an NBA market and as the home of the Grizzlies."

"We recognize that this has been a trying season for you as fans," Pera wrote. "That serves to reinforce our dedication to continue building a successful NBA franchise. We have made significant investment in our organization in recent years and considerable strides towards our goal of sustained success. We will continue to do so and are confident that you will see the results of those investments in coming seasons."

Thunder Don't Have Owner With More Than 19 Percent Stake In Franchise

Apr 2, 2018 11:04 AM

Clay Bennett has continued to serve as chairman of the Oklahoma City Thunder despite undergoing brain surgery before the 17-18 season began.

Bennett has appeared at Thunder games far less frequently this season than in the past.

Bennett and his fellow primary owners — Jeff Records Jr., Bob Howard II, Bill Cameron, George Kaiser, Jay Scaramucci and Everett Dobson — authorized Sam Presti to build a roster with a payroll totaling $134 million this season, which is third-highest in the NBA.

None of the owners of the Thunder own more than a 19 percent stake in the franchise.
