Jrue Holiday Wins 2nd Career Teammate Of The Year Award

NBA players have selected Jrue Holiday as the recipient of the 2021-22 Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award.

Presented annually since the 2012-13 season, the award recognizes the player deemed the best teammate based on selfless play, on- and off-court leadership as a mentor and role model to other NBA players, and commitment and dedication to team.

This is the second Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award for Holiday, who also earned the honor in the 2019-20 season as a member of the New Orleans Pelicans. He is the first player to win the award more than once.

A panel of league executives selected 12 finalists (six from each conference) for the Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award.  Current NBA players selected the winner from the list of finalists, with more than 300 players submitting their votes.

In addition to Holiday, the finalists were Chicago Bulls guard-forward DeMar DeRozan, Utah Jazz forward Rudy Gay, Denver Nuggets forward Jeff Green, Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem, Golden State Warriors forward Andre Iguodala, Memphis Grizzlies forward-center Jaren Jackson Jr., Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love, Dallas Mavericks center Boban Marjanović, Phoenix Suns guard Chris Paul, Toronto Raptors guard Fred VanVleet and Boston Celtics forward Grant Williams.

Holiday received 964 points (39 first-place votes) in balloting of NBA players.  Marjanović finished in second place with 936 points (48 first-place votes).  DeRozan finished in third place with 898 points (34 first-place votes).  Players were awarded 10 points for each first-place vote, seven points for each second-place vote, five points for each third-place vote, three points for each fourth-place vote and one point for each fifth-place vote.

Ja Morant Wins 2022 NBA Most Improved Player Award

Ja Morant has been named the 2021-22 NBA Most Improved Player.

A three-year NBA veteran, Morant becomes the first player to win the NBA Most Improved Player Award with Memphis. The annual award, which was first presented in the 1985-86 season, is designed to honor an up-and-coming player who has made a dramatic improvement from the previous season or seasons.

Morant received 221 points (38 first-place votes) from a global panel of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters.

Dejounte Murray finished in second place with 183 points (20 first-place votes).

Darius Garland finished in third place with 178 points (11 first-place votes). 

A first-time NBA All-Star selection this season, Morant averaged a career-high 27.4 points, 6.7 assists and 5.7 rebounds in 33.1 minutes in 57 games.

Scottie Barnes Narrowly Wins 2022 NBA Rookie Of The Year Over Evan Mobley

Scottie Barnes has been named the 2021-22 NBA Rookie of the Year. He is the third player to win the annual award with Toronto, joining Damon Stoudamire (1995-96) and Vince Carter (1998-99).

Barnes received 378 points (48 first-place votes) from a global panel of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters.  

Evan Mobley finished in second place with 363 points (43 first-place votes).  The 15-point difference between the first- and second-place finishers marks the smallest margin in NBA Rookie of the Year balloting under the current voting format, which began with the 2002-03 season.

Cade Cunningham finished in third place with 153 points (nine first-place votes).  Players were awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote.

Barnes averaged 15.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.08 steals and 0.74 blocks in 35.4 minutes in 74 games, leading all rookies in minutes, ranking third in points and rebounds and finishing fifth in assists, steals and blocks.

Patty Mills Wins 21-22 NBA Sportsmanship Award

Patty Mills is the recipient of the Joe Dumars Trophy for winning the 2021-22 NBA Sportsmanship Award.

The annual award is designed to honor a player who best represents the ideals of sportsmanship on the court. 

Each NBA team nominated one of its players for the NBA Sportsmanship Award.  From the list of 30 team nominees, a panel of league executives selected one finalist from each of the NBA’s six divisions.  Current NBA players selected the winner from the list of six finalists, with nearly 300 players submitting their votes through confidential balloting conducted by the league office.  

In addition to Mills (Atlantic Division), the finalists were Miami Heat center-forward Bam Adebayo (Southeast Division), Phoenix Suns forward Mikal Bridges (Pacific Division), Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland (Central Division), Denver Nuggets forward Jeff Green (Northwest Division) and Memphis Grizzlies forward-center Jaren Jackson Jr. (Southwest Division).

Marcus Smart Named 21-22 NBA Defensive Player Of The Year

Marcus Smart has been named the 2021-22 Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

This marks the first NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award for Smart, who becomes the first guard to earn the honor since Gary Payton in the 1995-96 season. Smart is also the second player to win the award with the Celtics, joining Kevin Garnett (2007-08). 

Smart received 257 points (37 first-place votes) from a global panel of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters.  

Mikal Bridges finished in second place with 202 points (22 first-place votes).  

Three-tim Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert finished in third place with 136 points (12 first-place votes).

Williams has widely been considered the favorite after finishing second last season.

Jenkins helped guide the Memphis Grizzlies to the second best record in the West.

Spoelstra led the Miami Heat to the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference.

Darius Garland, Ja Morant and Dejounte Murray have been announced as the finalists for the 21-22 NBA Most Improved Player.

All three players made the All-Star team in 2022 for the first time in their career.

Garland averaged 21.7 points and 8.6 assists for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Morant averaged 27.4 points and 6.7 assists while leading the Memphis Grizzlies to the second best record in the Western Conference.

Murray averaged 21.1 points and 9.2 assists for the San Antonio Spurs.

Tyler Herro, Cameron Johnson and Kevin Love have been announced as the three finalists for the 21-22 NBA Sixth Man of the Year award.

Herro has widely been considered the favorite to win the award on the strength of his season for the Miami Heat. Herro averaged 20.7 points per game for Miami.

Love averaged 13.6 points and 7.2 rebounds in a bounce back season with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Johnson averaged 12.5 points while shooting 43 percent on three-pointers for the Phoenix Suns.
