Joel Freeland Signing Two-Year Deal With CSKA Moscow After Declining Mavs' Offer

Jul 11, 2015 3:47 AM

Portland Trail Blazers free agent Joel Freeland has declined multiple NBA offers — including the Dallas Mavericks’ three-year, $6 million proposal — to sign a lucrative two-year contract with Euroleague contender CSKA Moscow, sources told RealGM.

Freeland and the Mavericks had advanced negotiations this week, making ground on a possible agreement, but a final offer of over $6 million with player incentives wasn’t enough to entice the 6-foot-11 center.

Freeland had several other offers, including veteran-minimum proposals from the Cleveland Cavaliers and San Antonio Spurs, sources said. For any NBA organization, Freeland would have been a legitimate rotation signing.

With CSKA Moscow, Freeland will receive a salary eclipsing $3 million per season with bonuses, guaranteed starting time and shots, and paid expenses. His deal contains no out clauses and had a July 10 deadline to agree upon an NBA contract. CSKA Moscow will announce the signing of Freeland on Monday.

The Blazers selected Freeland with the No. 30 overall selection in the 2006 NBA draft, and the British big man joined the franchise six years later.

Freeland brought a polished defensive mindset to the Blazers, a pro presence, and averaged 3.2 points and 3.4 rebounds in three seasons. He also dealt with injury setbacks, never playing over 52 games in a season.

Freeland, 28, became an unrestricted free agent after the Blazers elected not to extend a qualifying offer.
