Suns Recall Derrick Jones Jr. From D-League

The Phoenix Suns have recalled forward Derrick Jones Jr. from the Northern Arizona Suns, their NBA Development League affiliate.

Jones was assigned to the NAZ Suns on Dec. 23, his third assignment of the season.

In 14 games overall with the NAZ Suns this season, he has averaged 14.0 points on 48.0 percent shooting and 6.1 rebounds in 32.1 minutes. He scored a season-high 23 points against Iowa on Dec. 10.

The Orlando Magic have assigned Stephen Zimmerman to the Erie BayHawks of the NBA Development League.

Zimmerman (7’0”, 240, 9/9/96) has appeared in eight games this season with the Magic, averaging 1.3 ppg. and 1.8 rpg. in 4.0 minpg. He was previously assigned to Erie on November 28 and December 15. Zimmerman has played and started in six games with the BayHawks, averaging 17.3 ppg., 13.5 rpg., 1.0 apg., 1.50 blkpg. and 1.33 stlpg. in 34.2 minpg., while shooting .494 (42-85) from the field. He was originally selected in the second round (41st overall) of the 2016 NBA Draft by Orlando.

Taurean Prince has been assigned by the Atlanta Hawks to the Long Island Nets, Brooklyn’s NBA Development League affiliate, pursuant to the flexible assignment rule.

Prince has appeared in 20 games for the Hawks in his rookie season, recording averages of 3.4 points and 2.0 rebounds in 10.0 minutes per contest.

Bryn Forbes Assigned By Spurs To D-League

The San Antonio Spurs have assigned guard Bryn Forbes to the Austin Spurs of the NBA Development League.

In five appearances with Austin, Forbes is averaging 20.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 34.5 minutes, shooting .531 (34-64) from the field and .593 (16-27) from beyond the arc.

The first-year guard has appeared in 13 games for San Antonio this season.

Pierre Jackson Signs Two-Year Deal With Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks are signing Pierre Jackson to a partially guaranteed two-year deal.

Jackson had been averaging 29.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 6.0 assists in 35.7 minutes per game this season for the Texas Legends of the D-League.

Jackson was an early second round pick in 2013 out of Baylor by the Philadelphia 76ers with his draft rights going to the New Orleans Pelicans in the Jrue Holiday trade.

Vander Blue Named D-League Player Of The Week

Vander Blue of the Los Angeles D-Fenders today was named NBA Development League Performer of the Week for games played Monday, Dec. 19, through Sunday, Dec. 25.

Blue (6-4, Marquette) led Los Angeles to a 3-0 week, averaging a league-best 29.0 points on 52.2 percent shooting to go with 7.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.3 steals. On Dec. 19, he made a franchise-record 17 free throws on his way to 32 points in a 114-106 victory over the Long Island Nets. On Dec. 22, he tallied season highs with 33 points and 12 rebounds in a 99-92 win over the Greensboro Swarm, his first double-double of the season.

Blue is averaging 23.3 points on 47.4 percent shooting, 4.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.5 steals on the season. He has scored at least 30 points in three of his last four games. Blue was a member of the 2016 All-NBA D-League First Team and has been selected to the NBA D-League All-Star Game the past two seasons.

Other top performers considered included Northern Arizona’s Elijah Millsap, Oklahoma City’s Alex Caruso and Texas’ Pierre Jackson.

McCullough has started 14 games on assignment with Long Island this season, recording averages of 19.6 points and 8.5 rebounds in 32.1 minutes per game. 

In 10 games for Brooklyn this season, McCullough has averaged 2.6 points and 1.6 rebounds in 5.6 minutes per contest.

Chasson Randle Named D-League Player Of The Week

Chasson Randle of the Westchester Knicks today was named NBA Development League Performer of the Week for games played Monday, Dec. 12, through Sunday, Dec. 18.

Randle (6-3, Stanford) led Westchester to a 2-1 week, averaging 28.7 points (fourth in the league) on 51.8 percent shooting, including 17-of-29 from behind the arc, to go with 4.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.3 steals. On Dec. 16, he scored a season-high 38 points on 12-of-19 shooting to go with four rebounds, three assists and two steals in a 132-124 victory over the Texas Legends. Randle’s nine three-pointers in in the game set a franchise record. On Dec. 18, he hit seven threes on his way to 36 points in a 120-106 win over the Austin Spurs.

Randle is averaging 22.3 points on 43.4 percent shooting, 3.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists. He was acquired by Westchester as an affiliate player of the New York Knicks before the season after playing last year in the Czech Republic.

Other top performers considered included Fort Wayne’s Alex Poythress, Los Angeles’ Vander Blue, Northern Arizona’s Elijah Millsap, Oklahoma City’s Daniel Hamilton, Raptors 905’s CJ Leslie and Rio Grande Valley’s Darius Morris.

Magic Purchase Erie BayHawks, Will Relocate Team To Florida

The Orlando Magic and the NBA Development League announced that the Magic has agreed to purchase the Erie BayHawks and intend to relocate the team to Lakeland, Fla., to begin play for the 2017-18 season. The anticipated relocation of the NBA D-League team also includes the future development of a practice facility in nearby Winter Haven, Fla. With the purchase, the Magic becomes the 17th NBA team to own and operate an NBA D-League affiliate.

“Today's announcement not only shows the continued growth of the NBA D-League but also enables the Magic to develop players close to home and provides fans in Central Florida the opportunity to watch top NBA prospects compete,” said NBA D-League President Malcolm Turner. “I’m thrilled to welcome the Magic as NBA D-League owners, and I want to thank Steve Demetriou and Owen McCormick for their leadership in Erie.”

Richardson is averaging 21.0 points (.426 FG%, .440 3pt%, .763 FT%), 4.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 35.0 minutes per contest in 11 games (10 starts) for Reno, including a season-high 32 points (12-22 FG, 3-5 3pt, 5-7 FT), four rebounds and two assists against the Rio Grande Vipers on Sunday night. Ranked 12th in D-League scoring, the former Orangeman has led the Bighorns in scoring on six occasions, highlighted by a game-winning fade-away jumper as time expired to give Reno a 110-108 victory over the Texas Legends on Nov. 22. He logged his first double-double with a season-high 25 points (9-20 FG, 7-13 FT), a team-best 10 rebounds, one assist, four steals and three blocks in 36 minutes versus the L.A. Defenders on Dec. 8.
