Heat Defense Caught Anthony Off Guard

Apr 29, 2012 11:36 AM

The Heat switched up its defensive scheme against Carmelo Anthony in Game 1, opting to front and deny Anthony the ball in the mid-post.

"I wasn't expecting that," Anthony said. "I think they made some major adjustments out there fronting me, sending me down to the bigs, showing me two or three guys at a time, so it was an adjustment that they made. Now, it's time for us to make that adjustment."

Anthony shot 3-for-15 from the floor as the Knicks connected on 35.7 percent of their total shot attempts.

"We were trying to be more aggressive, trying to be more alert, making his catches tougher," Erik Spoelstra said. "[Carmelo] will make adjustments. He's too good of a player and shot maker, and he'll find ways to get open. He can put pressure on our defense, but the most important thing is our activity and our commitment to that type of energy level."

LeBron James expects Anthony to bounce back in Game 2.

"He's going to make adjustments like all great players do," James said. "We have to be ready for him in Game 2."

Biyombo Wants To Remain At Center Position

Apr 28, 2012 11:35 AM

Paul Silas believes Bismack Biyombo may be best suited for the power forward position in the long-term.

Biyombo is 6-9, 245 and may not be able to hold up against centers.

But Biyombo, who is known as the toughest player on Charlotte this season, disagrees with the assessment.

“I’m a fighter, I like to fight," said Biyombo. "I prefer to be a center."

Warriors Eager To Gauge Effectiveness Of Curry, Thompson Backcourt

Apr 28, 2012 11:22 AM

The Warriors are optimistic to see their new backcourt of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson play together next season.

Curry and Monta Ellis struggled to find cohesion in their time together.

"I think both Curry and Klay, what they both do well is they're very smart and they're very skilled," general manager Bob Myers said. "So you put two guys out there that know the game and have a tremendous skill in shooting the basketball, even when they don't have the ball in their hands you have to respect their shot. ... We haven't seen it yet really. We've seen a little of it, but not enough to really gauge it. But if the question is, 'Do we believe it can work?' Yeah, I believe it can work."

Billups Has Played Key Role Mentoring DeAndre Jordan

Apr 27, 2012 12:44 PM

Chauncey Billups has served as a mentor to DeAndre Jordan this season.

Billups played with Ben Wallace for many seasons and he believes Jordan could have a similar impact.

Jordan will play a big role in the Clippers' first round series against the Grizzlies.

"For us to have an excellent opportunity in this series, DJ is going to have to play very well, just like everybody," Vinny Del Negro said.

"I have to be our defensive anchor," Jordan said. "Just kind of be everybody's safety net. Me back there gives everybody a lot of more confidence to gamble [on defense]. And then I have to rebound, be one of the leaders, especially on the defensive end."

Billups talks to Jordan at practice, video sessions, shoot-arounds and during the game.

"He's been very receptive," Billups said. "He wants to be looked at like one of the best defenders in the league.

"But it's a process and sometimes I've got to slow myself down and remember that he is young and he doesn't have a lot of experience. I'm talking about a finished product in Ben Wallace and not the first stages. I think that DJ can certainly get there. He has a little ways to go, but he's locked into trying to get there and that's the most important thing."

Celtics Prefer Health, Rest Over Homecourt Pursuit

Apr 24, 2012 10:31 AM

While the Celtics could possibly overtake the Hawks for homecourt advantage in their probable first round series, Doc Rivers prefers getting his team healthy.

“That’s not even a question for me,’’ Rivers said. “I’m taking rest and health over home court.’’

Boston spent the first part of practice on Monday reviewing tape of the Hawks.

Paul Pierce also was choosing health over homecourt advantage.

“You want to be healthy first,’’ Pierce said. “We’re definitely a better home team than road team. Going into the playoffs, if everybody’s healthy, we’ve shown we can beat anybody in the Eastern Conference on their home court, so we’ll take health.

“I think it’s a fine line, because you want to stay in a certain rhythm. At the same time, you want to be rested. Everyone knows how grueling, how physical, how tough mentally and physically the playoffs are. So, I think it’s good to be sharp. We want to be as healthy as we can be going into the playoffs."

Heat Finally Mining True Value Of Mike Miller

Apr 24, 2012 10:27 AM

Mike Miller has missed a combined 71 games during his two seasons with the Heat, but he is beginning to show signs of why he was signed shortly after LeBron James and Chris Bosh were added to Dwyane Wade.

“We’re finally starting to see some of the things that we’ve always liked about Mike," said Erik Spoelstra.

Miami was plus-23 with Miller on the floor on Sunday.

“With guys out we’ve been able to bring the ball to him a lot more and not just for him to run to the corner and be the recipient of plays like that last one [where he drilled a game-clinching three-pointer against the Rockets]. We’ve had calls for him where there is the responsibility for him to create shots for the team. And I think that’s great for him.

“You see the versatility he brings. He’s not just a spot-up three-point shooter. He can put the ball on the floor, be a timely offensive rebounder. He makes passes on catch-and-shoots. He brings another dimension to our game that is not simply pick-and-roll. That’s a valuable piece.”

Rose Playing Complementary Role As He Returns From Injuries

Apr 24, 2012 10:00 AM

Derrick Rose played a complementary role in Chicago's 93-83 win over Dallas on Saturday as he attempts to get his game back after missing time with five separate injuries this season.

“He’s been out a long time,” coach Tom Thibodeau said. “He’s finding his way, like Rip [Hamilton] has finally gotten comfortable after going through the extended period off. Derrick is going through the same thing. What Derrick has done in the past, he’s gotten up to speed very quickly. Hopefully, that will be the case this time around.”

Pacers Sticking With George Hill As Starting Point Guard

Apr 21, 2012 11:45 AM

The Pacers will stick with George Hill as the starter at point guard even after the return of Darren Collison from injury.

Collison has been out with a sore groin.

Indiana is 7-0 since Hill became the starter on April 9th against the Raptors.

Hill is averaging 15.4 points and has a 6-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio in his seven games as a starter.

"I don't think it's nothing I'm really doing," Hill said. "We have great players that are starting to play well."

Chandler: Knicks Have Yet To Make Proper Adjustments Against Miami

Apr 20, 2012 4:12 PM

Tyson Chandler said the Knicks will have to make some adjustments to overcome their 0-3 regular season record against Miami.

“I’m OK with it,’’ Chandler said of the possibility of facing the Heat in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. “They’ve beaten us obviously every game. I don’t feel we necessarily made the adjustment to that team. That’s a team you have to make adjustments and have to make them pay for how aggressive they are [defensively]. We haven’t done that yet. We have to be willing if that’s the matchup to break down tape, focus in and see where we can beat them.’’

Chandler is encouraged by the Knicks’ play heading into the postseason.

“I feel great the way we’re playing right now,’’ Chandler said. “With the way Melo’s playing and all our role players. All our role players are playing well. It’s not so much the key guys going into the playoffs. It’s how everyone else is doing on the team. Are they confident? Will they take a shot when the ball is swung around to them? Those are things that win games.’’

Terrence Williams Becoming Invaluable To Kings

Apr 20, 2012 12:31 PM

The Kings have several heavy usage players, which makes the presence of Terrence Williams all the more intriguing.

Williams has always been more of a facilitator than a scorer. His presence has made the need for a traditional point guard to lessen for the Kings.

"On every team, whether you're little or big, the mindset is to score," Williams said. "But that isn't me. I always wanted to be Magic (Johnson)."

Sacramento signed Williams for the remainder of the season in late March after he was waived by Houston.

Williams will be a free agent this summer.

"Terrence finds people in their rhythm," said Keith Smart, "and that's not an easy thing to do."
