Calipari Envisions Coaching At Kentucky For At Least Six More Years

Nov 30, 2012 12:35 PM

John Calipari envisions coaching at Kentucky for at least six more years.

Calipari was hired to resuscitate the Wildcats program prior to the 2009-10 season.

“Probably another six years, maybe seven,” Calipari said when asked how long he can continue coaching at his current pace. “This is a 10-year run, then I'll pass it on to somebody else to keep this program going, because it's so important to this state. I'm not the kind of guy who could retire on the job, who'd just stay to get paid. I'm not doing it for numbers or to pass everyone's win record.”

In three full seasons, Calipari has compiled a 102-14 record.

SMU Showcasing Larry Brown To Raise Funds, Generate Program Awareness

Nov 30, 2012 11:49 AM

Southern Methodist University is showcasing Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown in an effort to break out of relative obscurity.

"We're using it every way from fund raising, to creating exclusive or intimate interactions with Larry and our staff, to developing excitement on campus, getting him in front of fraternities, sororities, campus organizations," says Rick Hart, SMU's athletic director. "We're trying to showcase coach Brown and utilize not just his talents and abilities, but his reputation and accomplishments to create for our program."

All of the off-court attention has startled Brown.

"I'm like a trophy here now at SMU," Brown says. "I'm doing a lot of things outside of basketball, but in the NBA, it's all basketball."

Brown, 72, will continue making public appearances, even though he doesn't particularly enjoy talking about himself.

"I realized I don't like being the face of the program,” Brown says. “That's the thing that makes me uncomfortable. I want SMU basketball to be relevant, not me being head coach."

Shabazz Muhammad Ruled Immediately Eligible

Nov 16, 2012 7:30 PM

Shabazz Muhammad has been reinstated by the NCAA to play immediately for UCLA after the university "acknowledged amateurism violations" in an appeal to the association.

"The university required the student-athlete to miss 10 percent of the season (three games) and repay approximately $1,600 in impermissible benefits. The NCAA agreed the actions taken by the university were sufficient. Because Muhammad has already sat out three games, he is now eligible to compete," said the NCAA in a statement.

Muhammad made unofficial recruiting visits to North Carolina and Duke that were paid for by North Carolina-based financial adviser Ben Lincoln.

UCLA Set To Appeal Shabazz Muhammad Decision

Nov 16, 2012 5:21 PM

UCLA is appealing to the NCAA committee Friday to make Shabazz Muhammad eligible.

"Exactly what time I can't even tell you that," Bruins coach Ben Howland said on a conference call. "I've honestly never been through one of these so I don't know how quickly they're resolved. ... I really don't know."

Muhammad was ruled ineligible Nov. 9 due to a violation of amateurism rules.

"We're very hopeful and remain very positive about Shabazz," Howland said. "We've been very cooperative with the NCAA, and the family has, too. Shabazz and his family have been unbelievably cooperative.

"We'll be very excited once we get him back. ... He's a great talent. He's a great kid. He works extremely hard. Has a great motor. I think he's going to be a heck of a player."

Alleged Conversation Implies NCAA Prejudged Shabazz Muhammad Eligibility

Nov 15, 2012 12:49 AM

Attorneys representing Shabazz Muhammad are calling for the NCAA to drops its investigation and declare him eligible based on an overheard conversation on an Aug. 7 commuter flight.

Muhammad is a freshman at UCLA and one of the top recruits of the 2012 class.

An email from an attorney said she was seated behind a man who was speaking loudly about the work of his girlfriend, an "attorney with the NCAA."

The girlfriend, whom he identified as "Abigail," was investigating Muhammad. The man made it clear that the NCAA would find Muhammad ineligible and not allow him to play this season, the email said.

Abigail Grantstein, an assistant director of enforcement, is the NCAA's lead investigator on the Muhammad case.

The attorney confirmed her story in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. She was concerned about the lack of confidentiality and "the cavalier discussion of this young man's future being tossed about for everyone to hear."

The NCAA had not seen the email and did not know it existed until it was brought to the organization's attention Wednesday, spokeswoman Stacey Osburn said.

Shabazz Muhammad Could Play In UCLA Opener

Nov 8, 2012 11:24 AM

Shabazz Muhammad is "real close" to being healthy enough to play in UCLA's season opener against Indiana State, coach Ben Howland said Tuesday.

"At the end of practice, he was running with our team, and he's able to shoot now," Howland said.

Muhammad, who is recovering from right shoulder strain, has yet to be cleared by the NCAA, which is investigating ties his family and AAU team allegedly had with two financial agents.

Dez Wells Declared Eligible Immediately For Maryland

Nov 8, 2012 10:39 AM

Dez Wells has been ruled eligible for the 12-13 season with Maryland.

Wells transfered from Xavier after getting expelled following sexual assault allegations that were dismissed.

Wells was the Atlantic 10 rookie of the year, averaging 9.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.

“We’re excited for Dez because at the end of the day, the NCAA made the right decision,” Coach Mark Turgeon said in a statement. “Our staff did an incredible job in putting this NCAA waiver appeal together on Dez’s behalf. Dez has been a welcomed addition, a great teammate, and has made a seamless transition in getting acclimated to our campus. This has been a long process for him and his family, and we’re grateful he can put it behind him and focus on being a student-athlete at the University of Maryland.”

Ben Howland thinks Shabazz Muhammad will be cleared to play for UCLA.

“I’m very optimistic about Shabazz,” Howland told reporters Thursday. “I can’t tell you how long or when, I don’t know that. But again, these are great kids and I’m very confident that things are going to work out and very optimistic.”

If Muhammad is deemed eligible, the Bruins figure to start him along with Kyle Anderson, Larry Drew II, Travis Wear and Josh Smith in Howland's new up-tempo offense.

"We're trying to play faster, push the ball and take advantage of the fact we have depth and speed," Howland said.
