Kenny Atkinson Explains Why He Coached Nets In Summer League

Jul 17, 2017 2:50 PM

Kenny Atkinson coached the Brooklyn Nets in Summer League, which is rare amongst the NBA coaching fraternity as they typically delegate the duties to one of their assistants.

“I think it’s three-fold: One - I think this is a young core we’re trying to build with so I thought that was important," said Atkinson. "If I’m gonna ask them to play — guys like Spencer [Dinwiddie], Rondae doesn’t have to play — if I’m gonna ask them to do it, then I feel like I should be with them. I think this is the best way I can coach them. I can be hands-on, have film sessions. To me, this is kind of like a dress rehearsal. It’s hard to do that just working guys out in the summer and just doing skill work.

"So I think there’s real value [through Summer League] in helping them improve. And I just value Summer League a lot. For a staff, figuring out issues. I think it’s undervalued honestly.

“Lastly, even improving myself. Even [in their July 13 win over the Nuggets], there were 2 or 3 situations where I could have played it better. It’s like I’m taking a test. You’ve really got to have the answer. I obviously don’t have a lot of experience being a head coach. This just gives me more time in a flight simulator.

"And it’s hard to get during the offseason. You get six months off in the offseason. So this gets me back, gets the juices flowing.”

Lonzo Ball Records Summer League's First 30-Point, 10-Assist Game

Jul 13, 2017 10:32 AM

Lonzo Ball had 36 points and 11 assists in the Los Angeles Lakers' Summer League win on Wednesday over the Philadelphia 76ers.

According to RealGM's database that dates back to 2004, no player in Summer League had ever recorded a game scoring 30+ points and 10+ assists.

Since a disappointing opening game in which he went 2-for-15, Ball has since recorded a triple-double and then his 36-point, 8-rebound, 11-assist, 5-steal, 2-block performance against the 76ers.

Lonzo Ball Wears Nike Shoes In Breakthrough Summer League Performance

Jul 13, 2017 9:58 AM

Lonzo Ball wore Nike shoes on Wednesday, which coincidentally was his breakout performance of Summer League, finishing with 36 points, 11 assists, eight rebounds, five steals and two blocks.

"At BBB, you can play in what you want," Lonzo Ball said on SportsCenter after the game. "I already played in both of my shoes, might as well get the 'Mamba Mentality' going. Put 'em on, and it worked out tonight."

Ball was wearing purple Kobe A.D.s, which were released on July 1st.

There are "no negotiations with Nike" at this time, LaVar Ball said.

Big Baller Brand shoes cost $495 and are set to ship Nov. 24.

Markelle Fultz Out For Summer League With High Ankle Sprain

Jul 9, 2017 3:35 PM

Markelle Fultz suffered a high ankle sprain in Saturday's Summer League game.

Fultz was helped off the court after rolling his left ankle.

"We will treat him accordingly and be as cautious as we can, making sure he is healthy," 76ers summer league coach Lloyd Pierce said. "We will know [more] once we get some treatment on him. I haven't heard anything [more]."

Fultz was attempting to block a drive in the third quarter when he jumped and landed on the heel of Jabari Brown.

Joel Embiid missed the first two seasons of his career while Ben Simmons missed his first season though he's expected to return for 17-18.

"I'm a little bit punch-drunk with the injuries that we've had with our first players selected over the years,'' said Brett Brown.

Fultz will miss the remainder of Summer League.
