More than a week since the Rockets were stunned to have their season ended in another first round, they still don't know if Jeff Van Gundy's tenure as head coach has come to an end as well.
The Rockets have not merely sat by the phone waiting to hear if Van Gundy would like to return. Assuming that those "on all levels" meetings that GM Daryl Morey spoke of were not chats in the Toyota Center elevators, owner Leslie Alexander has weighed in. Morey knows how the boss and the coach feel. They just don't know yet what call to make.
Van Gundy seemed ambivalent about coming back all season. More than just turn down chances to talk about it with former GM Carroll Dawson in December and Morey in February, he described himself as unsure about his plans.
"We both have a choice at the end of this year," Van Gundy said in February. "It's not just their choice. It's not just their option. Each side has an option."
