Magic forward Rashard Lewis will lose $1.7 million in salary because of his 10-game suspension.

The NBA announced the suspension on Thursday after Lewis violated the league's anti-drug policy. Lewis told the Orlando Sentinel that he purchased and took DHEA from a supplement store.

DHEA is a chemical compound that the body makes naturally, and is also found in some over-the-counter supplements.

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy and general manager Otis Smith have both shown support for Lewis.

"I feel bad for him," Van Gundy told the Sentinel. "He's a great guy who made an innocent mistake. I think it points up how careful the players have got to be about those things, and we try to talk to them about that. At the start of training camp every year, we tell them they shouldn't take anything without going through the training staff or the strength coach and people like that."

Smith added: "He feels bad about it, feels bad that he's hurting and affecting the team and the organization and himself. The biggest thing I told him is we're a team. We're a family. We all do crazy, stupid things, and sometimes we have to make adjustments. That's what kids do; sometimes they make mistakes. I don't know if it was a knowing mistake. I don't think it was."
