There is a very real possibility that the Mavericks will not use center Erick Dampier as a trade chip.

"A good chance," one team source said.

Dallas was hoping to be able to use Dampier in a sign-and-trade for LeBron James and New Orleans is now telling teams that Chris Paul won't be placed on the market.

Meanwhile, the Mavericks are determined not to simply deal Dampier's $13 million expiring contract just to take back another bad deal.

Dampier's contract is not fully guaranteed.

Sources say Minnesota has been urging Dallas to part with Dampier's contract in exchange for Al Jefferson, who has three years left on his contract at $42 million.
