Metta World Peace showed up Friday to the first day of training camp slightly overweight and greatly out-of-playing shape, blaming his lack of conditioning on the uncertainty of the lockout.

“You know, I didn’t think the season would start until January,” he said. “You work out, you’re in shape in October, September, August. You’re in shape (at that time.)

“Then (NBA commissioner) David Stern said it’s going to be  a ‘nuclear winter” and I’m thinking the season isn’t gong to start in December, you know. So, (you have) a little bit more martinis in November.

“Then boom! David Stern says no ‘nuclear winter’ and you have a season.”
