On Wednesday night, Doc Rivers put to rest any speculation that the Celtics actually traded MarShon Brooks to the Nets last June. Brooks was never in Boston’s plans as they had agreed to a pick swap with New Jersey that essentially netted them JaJuan Johnson and a second-round pick in 2014.

“No, [the trade] was done before,” Rivers told reporters when asked if the Celtics knew the type of scorer Brooks was before he was flipped to the Nets. “We didn’t really draft him. I don’t even know why they go through the charade because the deal was done before the pick.”

Danny Ainge and Nets general manager Billy King had been working the phone on Draft Night, leading to the deal.

“The Nets called us and told us to draft him,” Rivers said.

Brooks has turned heads in the first week-plus of his NBA career, averaging 21.8 points per 36 minutes through his first seven games. He has scored 21 points in two separate games.

Not that Brooks was ever even close to becoming a member of the Celtics, but in hindsight he could have played a significant role off the bench for Rivers. Paul Pierce missed the first three games of the season (heel) and Ray Allen was inactive on Wednesday night (flu).
