The Los Angeles Lakers have hired Mike D'Antoni as their new head coach.

D'Antoni signed a three-year, $12 million deal in a surprise development as Phil Jackson was widely considered the favorite.

Jackson was "asking for the moon," according to a source.

Mike Dunleavy was also considered for the position.

D'Antoni is familiar with Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard from their time together on the United States Basketball team, while he coached Steve Nash for several seasons with the Suns.
