The Miami Heat have released Eric Griffin, a league source told RealGM.

Griffin, an athletic forward at 6-foot-8, intrigued the Heat in the Las Vegas summer league and appeared in six preseason games. He averaged nearly two points and one rebound in the preseason – highlighted by a leap over the 6-foot-10 Mason Plumlee against Brooklyn Nets.

There had been discussion that Miami wanted to keep Griffin in order for the franchise to maintain rights to him even when he’d be sent to the NBA D-League. The Heat also brought Roger Mason Jr. and Michael Beasley into training camp under non-guaranteed contracts, but both are virtual certainties to make the regular season roster.

Entering his second professional season, Griffin, 23, will receive significant interest overseas and in the D-League. He went unselected out of Campbell University in the 2012 draft.
