The Cleveland Cavaliers reached out to John Calipari at least once before David Griffin's interim general manager tag was removed, according to a source.

The understanding was that Calipari would not be joining the Cavaliers and the club moved on.

ESPN reported that the huge offer to Calipari was made within the past two weeks after Griffin was hired as GM permanently.

One source said that Dan Gilbert expects to be informed of every step in the process, but he will then talk to big name candidates directly without informing his staff.

Various members of the Cavaliers' front office were surprised by Monday's report of the Calipari offer as they were unaware of ongoing negotiations.
