Michael Porter Jr. has asked for his release from his letter of intent from the University of Washington.

Porter is widely considered the top recruit in the country.

The decision was prompted by the firing of coach Lorenzo Romar and parts of his coaching staff, including Porter’s father, Michael Porter Sr.

“I was ready to go to UW and make a big difference,” said Porter Jr. said. “Not saying I won’t still go there, but it was unfortunate. At the same time, it’s exciting to see what God has planned for me…I plan to get that (release) and reopen my options. Washington is definitely still on the list.”

Mike Hopkins was hired to replace Romar.

“I’m not sure what I’m going to do, but I think I probably will meet with him at some point,” Porter Jr. said of Hopkins.
