Pau Gasol will decline his $16.2 million player option with the San Antonio Spurs but will work with the team on a longer term deal.

Gasol's decision will presumably give the Spurs more cap space to operate in free agency.

Gasol signed a two-year, $31.6 million deal with the Spurs last offseason.

The Spurs have been mentioned as a potential free agent destination for Chris Paul and others such as George Hill, Jrue Holiday and Kyle Lowry. Gasol's salary was one of the main impediments towards clearing space.
