The Los Angeles Lakers have grown more realistic about their chances of signing a marquee free agent in 2018 and have begun to recalibrate their focus for 2019.

The 2019 class could include Kawhi Leonard, Klay Thompson and Jimmy Butler.

The Lakers had coveted the 2018 class, which includes LeBron James, Paul George and DeMarcus Cousins. Cousins recently ruptured his Achilles while George has spoken publicly about his interest in re-signing with the Thunder. James remains the most difficult player to gauge but is believed to be reluctant to sign with the Lakers without another star.

By waiting one more offseason, the Lakers will have a more favorable cap situation and will also give their young core more time to prove themselves.
