Following his experience running the front office of the Phoenix Suns, Steve Kerr returned to broadcasting and was living a comfortable life based in San Diego.

“When Steve was doing TV, he would tell me that some nights he would drive home with an empty feeling after the game,” said Bruce Fraster, who is an assistant coach with the Warriors and a longtime friend of Kerr.

“I loved broadcasting," said Kerr. "It gave me a great life, but after a while, everything you do, it doesn’t matter who wins.” There was something particularly frustrating about the proximity, minus the participation. “For the year or two before I decided to coach, there was a hollow feeling, because I was so fascinated with the strategy going on. I tried to explain what I was seeing, but it was all in theory. I couldn’t practice it.”

Kerr considered a return to the NBA as a head coach for several years. Kerr also considered joining the New Knicks in 2014 before being hired by the Warriors.
