A few days after winning the 2016 Finals, David Griffin gathered his staff and asked them to explore ways the Cleveland Cavaliers could acquire Kevin Durant in free agency.

Durant was heading for free agency and there was an increasing fear that he could sign with the Golden STate Warriors.

The Cavaliers would have had to essentially gut their team in order to acquire Durant.

"I don't believe you can dream big enough in the NBA," Griffin said recently of that meeting. "You have to go through the exercise."
