Magic Johnson has stepped down as the Los Angeles Lakers' President of Basketball Operations.

Johnson and Rob Pelinka were hired by Jeanie Buss to replace Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak in 2017.

While the Lakers successfully cleared cap space and signed LeBron James, Johnson's tenure with the team produce mixed results.

“Somebody’s going to have to tell my boss because I knew I couldn’t be face-to-face and tell (Jeanie)," said Johnson. "I couldn’t stand to tell her.”

Johnson said he preferred his role as an ambassador to the NBA as he received several tampering charges during his tenure.

“I was happier when I wasn’t the president,” said Johnson.
