The New York Knicks would have considered bringing back Carmelo Anthony had they signed two marquee free agents this summer, league sources told Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Anthony hasn't played in the NBA since parting ways with the Rockets in November.

Charania reports that there were conversations between Anthony's camp and Team USA Basketball about the possibility for his return during this summer's FIBA World Cup, though both sides moved on from that idea.

Executives around the league also believe that Anthony could retire with the Knicks after signing a one-day contract if no other possibilities emerge.
