The NBA will not test players for marijuana during the 20-21 season. The league similarly did not test players during the restart in Orlando.

The NBA, however, will test for cause with past offenders or those who have given reasonable cause to suspect use.

While the decision is largely rooted in limiting unnecessary contacts during COVID-19, there is a significant expectation that the testing program will be phased out altogether in the near future.

The NBA currently has the harshest marijuana policy in all of North American professional sports with a third infraction resulting in a five-game suspension.
