The Los Angeles Clippers are believed to have done "their due diligence in seeing what they could get on the market for [Paul] George before deciding that the extension was the best option," a front office source tells The Ringer.

George signed a four-year, $190 million extension and would have likely received a comparable contract on the open market had he become a free agent in 2021.

The Clippers gave up a sizable trade package for George and this extension insures at least part of their future.

“Um, I was confident in myself and where I wanted to be at,” George said when asked Thursday if he knew the extension was imminent when he said he wanted to retire with the Clippers. “This is home. I’m at home. And I want to build something, a real foundation, and ultimately this is where I want to leave the biggest imprint.”
