Malik Monk signed a veteran's minimum deal with the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2021 offseason and he's quite comfortably outplayed that deal. The Lakers will be limited in their capacity to re-sign Monk and can only offer him a 120 percent raise off the minimum, or whatever midlevel available to them.

"You look back and it's insane he was a minimum player," said Adrian Wojnarowski of Monk on his podcast. "But you've seen him increase his value. They won't be able to afford to keep him."

"Most likely not," replied Dave McMenamin.

McMenamin detailed the scenarios for the Lakers and also suggested that maybe he could take one more make-good contract and then get paid a more representative offer in 2023.

"The difference is last summer, three teams called," said McMenamin. "The Lakers, the Mavericks, the Knicks. This summer, you would imagine not only based on how much money will be out there on the market, but just the way he was able to perform this year, there will probably be more offers."
